Hey league!
Ten years ago, I wrote a far too long post on this forum detailing my decision to step down as commissioner due to my busy new college life I was about to step into. I copied it below for your enjoyment. I was assured that college would be far too busy for me to run BKDB any longer. I chuckle to myself now, thinking back to my then 19 year old self. "How did I think I was busy?" says the now father of the two young boys who wrestled with me for about an hour straight after I got home from work today.
I stepped back as commish temporarily to get the league off the tarmac for the 2015 season... and somehow ten years went by and here I am.
And this fall, I found myself with the same feeling I had felt ten years ago. Unsure about my time to commit to this role with a busy new season ahead. I joyfully get to spend time with my wife, two young healthy boys, and another baby (hopefully a girl!) on the way this March. I'm studying to be a pastor and will finish classroom studies this May. I can't wait to preach the good news of Jesus every week. If you ever want to hear why I want to spend my entire working life in a low-salaried job talking about Jesus, I'd love to have that conversation. We're going to be moving twice in the next 18 months, possibly to different states as I intern and then start at a new church. I'd rather have the time to do things like be my son's baseball coach. He already loves it. "Daddy, can we play baseball?" He can slug it with his plastic bat. It'll be a busy season, but a good one.
It's a fitting time for me to step back as commissioner of Base Knock Dynasty Baseball. This league in so many ways has outgrown me as its commissioner. And I honestly smile to see that. The League Committee has been absolutely fantastic these past two years. A huge thank you to Will, Kyle, Tim, and Stephen. You guys are the best. I have full trust that this committee can fittingly run the league going forward and keep it from plunging into inactivity like it did a decade ago when I first tried to step down. I'm not unplugging for the winter and will be around as we go through this off-season. I wanted to get the off-season team by team sheet made and the schedule for the winter out before stepping down. I hope that helps. The League Committee was in consensus as I discussed this with them that a new figurehead should be chosen as commissioner of the league. We can all figure that out. I'll cast my vote as 1 of 30.
I can't believe this league has continued until 2024... soon 2025. It'll have spanned 15 MLB seasons as we enter the 2025 season. This league has changed so much. Reading that old resignation from 2014... I was reminded of the plethora of things that have happened in all the years we've been playing fantasy baseball together. Many have left and moved on. I miss some of them. Others... not as much.
It's really a privilege watching each of you go through different seasons of life. Some awesome (new children, new jobs, places to live, your team winning the WS)... some not so good (pandemics, losing TBR Alex, parents passing away, sickness, losing jobs). I'm glad we can be a support for one another, and I hope that continues. Every time I get the chance to tell someone new about this league and the people in it, it's one of my favorite parts of that day. You all are high quality individuals.
As I said a decade a go, with words I didn't quite understand as I do now, there is no tangible reward to participating in BKDB. No cash. No trophy (though I've always wondered...). But the reward is in the joy it brings to our lives. The people we get to meet. The way your first playoff win feels. Seeing a draft pick you made fly up prospect rankings. You wouldn't believe the amount of times I tried to tell my wife about something funny on the podcast she couldn't really understand. The whole cousin story Stephen shared... man.
I'm so grateful you guys encouraged me, stuck with me, and pushed me to be better in my time as commissioner of this league. Thank you. I'm excited to continue to run the Colorado Rockies and hopefully get us back to our championship ways from... *counts* seven seasons ago... yikes. I need to win the NL West again.
Action Steps:
- Elect a new Commissioner. Maybe after the new league committee for the next two years is voted in?
- I'll hand over admin logins and stuff to that person. Happy to do an orientation... not that complicated.
- Have a great 2025 season! Onward together!

Hey guys,
It's been a long time coming... over this past year, thinking about the day when I'd write this up.
March 30th, 2011.
I was hanging out at a friends house and had just finished showing him my team at the now non-existing Dugout Dynasty League. He's kind of a creative sort of guy, so once he saw this league he wanted to make one himself. So, we got to work writing up rules and such that night along with creating the Proboards site. I'd seen so many leagues fail... so I honestly didn't have high hopes for this one to work out. However, I pulled in some great owners from the get go in Mike (Orioles) from Dugout Dynasty, Derrick (Angels) from who knows where, and many of you probably remember Gregg Willis (Former Astros owner).
Together we got this league going! Pulling in owners who have made a huge impact on this league that are still here today: Jared (Braves), Austin (Cardinals), Michael (Indians), Nate (Mariners), Jake (Rays), Mike (Mets), Bill (Royals), Jacob (Tigers), Noah (Athletics), and Kyle (Twins). The first year ended in a success with a half season in the books. We had our first Amateur Draft, which was successfully completed. Incredible to get 30 teams to do that.... with the help of auto-pick
. We had our ups and downs, the "darla" blow up that summer, owners coming and going. The whole package. I didn't want to play a half-season and desired to keep us away from actual play until 2012, but I was glad I was overruled in the vote as we decided to do a short half-season. In the end, the Philadelphia Phillies, led by Jon Gaskins, defeated Derrick and his mighty Angels to win the first ever Base Knock Dynasty Baseball championship. They were stacked. And I lost in the NLCS... stupid Phillies.
We moved forward into our first official off-season. This is where I was pretty sure the league would lose its steam and we'd be done. However, this was not the case. The first off-season was filled with exorbitant amounts of money being dished out to players. Many things were obviously wrong, as we'd find out. The salary cap was too high. I hadn't thought of IFA. How do we determine a fair pay scale for rookies? Thankfully, we had Gregg. I'm telling you guys, this league wouldn't have made it past the first year without Gregg. He did... so much. It was crazy. I was the commissioner, but I felt he was leading the league. We pushed through and as the sun rose on the 2012 season we were still afloat. Amazing.
By then, there had been much shuffling around of ownership, so we had a plethora of excited owners ready to start fresh for a whole season in 2012: Michael (Cubs) and Chris (Red Sox). Our first real season. It was a thriller. The Angels quickly took control of the American League, while I once again thought I had the National League in my grasp. However, this wasn't the Phillies year, or the Rockies year in the National League. It was Slava's year. What a GM/Co-Commissioner he was. The Google Docs? Almost completely created by Slava. I was stuck in my archaic ways of having a forum post here with the official rosters. His idea completely changed the dynamic of the league, making things click and have a much more official look. Slava and Derrick met in the 2012 Base Knock Dynasty Baseball World Series... where Derrick got his revenge (Hail Halos). I... once again, lost in the NLCS.
We added a core group of owners towards the end of the 2012 season into the off-season: Tyler (Brewers), Paul (Phillies), Max (Pirates), and Jeff (Rangers). It was time to implement the MiLB Draft. Again, Gregg's idea. However... midway through the 2012-2013 off-season, Gregg disappeared. Soon after, Slava left as well. It really put Derrick and I in a tough spot as the leadership of the league, as both of them had done so much. However, we continued forward, completing a second complete off-season with a new arbitration system, franchise tag system... the whole deal. It's hard making a system that you have to project will work to even things out in the future. But we did it, and we're seeing the benefits now.
2013 felt like my year to win it all. I was finishing up my junior year in high school, and my senior year was just around the corner. I knew things would only get busier, so I put my chips in the middle and hoped I'd make it past the NLCS with the clock ticking in my mind for Base Knock Dynasty Baseball. The league seemed much more even this season, as the new arbitration system had spread talent around a little more. Teams started to flip, just like in the major leagues. The Phillies became beatable, and the Twins and Rangers became two dang good teams. We hit the playoffs and I was ready. I won, beating the 18-1 Rangers.
We added some more great ownership that season: Santiago (Blue Jays), Kyle (D'backs), Jeff (Dodgers), Dolan (Giants), Brandon (Marlins), Michael (Nationals), Matt (Padres), and Clayton (White Sox). This pushed us through the 2013-2014 off-season. I could tell that I wasn't really able to put in the long hours into the league as I had in years past. Consequently, the cool previews... at least I thought they were cool, didn't quite make it last off-season. Nor did my predictions. However, I got through all the deadlines with free agency and the MiLB draft, with a lot of help from Derrick. Definitely wouldn't have made it through the off-season without that guy.
We started this season... in my head, I was now planning my exit as commissioning, looking at Derrick as the obvious replacement for me, but also knowing that he needed help, like I had in Slava and Gregg. We started out, and I wasn't able to keep up with everything like the sidebars all the time, but I managed.
Then, I left for my month long "away-period" in Colorado and Brazil. Both were incredible. This is my first time checking back in at the league... and all I've done is open up this blank post to write to you guys. I hope everything went smoothly here. I know my team probably sucks now, but that's okay. I've had three winning years. There's good. There's bad. That's why I like this league. There were times went I wanted to rip my hair out because Noah was leaving again, or because Derrick wouldn't lose a game, or because Matt was suddenly way better than me in the NL West, or because someone screwed up something here or someone was fighting with this person for this stupid reason and was threatening to leave. You guys have no idea how many times I had to plead with owners to stick around... despite this guy or that guy.
But with all the bad, the good is what kept me going. Seeing 30 owners all log on on one day. For a FREE dynasty baseball league, with no prize. No reward. That's what I was thinking, why are people still logging on?
But there is a reward. The reward is seeing a group of people that don't really know each other come together to do something fun. And although it may take some time, and might seem to waste time. Even though your team sucks, or this guy got hurt, or this or that, that feeling of seeing another win in the win column gives you that spark to keep going. Because even though none of this matters. None of this truly matters. Maybe beating the Angels or the Rockies in Base Knock Dynasty Baseball put a smile on your face that stayed there in your conversations with people in real life throughout the day. And that's cool.
I love baseball. I admit I don't know much about it, the minor leaguers are kind of a mystery to me (why my farm sucks). The rules don't always make sense, but baseball is great.
In case you haven't figured this out, this is my resignation post from being commissioner of this awesome league. I leave for college in 19 days. Wow... it'll be different. I want to go into college fully engaged, looking for new friendships, new opportunities, and anything else that comes my way.
I've enjoyed every minute... well, most minutes, of being your commissioner, and thanks for putting up with me for so long. You guys are all great. I won't be leaving... I was considering just ditching the whole thing, but I want to rebuild the Rockies slowly and surely. I won't be doing very much of anything in leading, as I won't have the time, but I hope to get a good 10 minutes in a day to... for once... focus on my team.
Along with my resignation, the Mariners are going to be leaving the league. My dad has relied on me for a lot of help to manage his team. He's supporting my family, and, to tell you the truth, he doesn't have time to run a team in this league. I've helped him with drafting and setting his lineup over these past few years. I won't be at home, and I don't want this to be just me running his team by myself from afar. I don't want two teams.
Alright, not sure how many of your read this entire... rather sappy exit post, but I hope you guys did... as my main point was at the end, haha.
I'm leaving it in your hands who the next commissioner of this league should be. I've already talked a little to the leadership, and I believe Derrick is the guy to take over, as he's already been leading much of the league as of late.
However, it's your decision. Just like every decision that's major has been voted on by the league.
I'm looking forward to simply managing the Rockies and beating the crap out of those dang Padres. Nothing personal Matt, your team is just good.
I wish you all the best. I really do. This league is a lot of fun.
And one last thing I want to reiterate. Don't ever let this league overtake a real life priority. I hope new management tries to be as understanding as I tried to be. People have bad times, good times, things going on, and they're all more important than getting your free agent information in by a certain date.
