Red Sox Receive
OF - Matt Holiday ($17, $17, $17, $17, $17O) SP - Clayton Richard ($.9, $1.4, $1.9) RP – Pat Neshak ($1.6, $2.1) Nick Castellanos – Minors Eddie Butler - Minors
Padres Receive
OF - Josh Reddick ($.3, pre arb) SP – Jeff Samardzija ($.3, pre arb) RP – Steve Delebar ($2.1, $2.1) 3b – Gregg Dobbs ($2) 3b – Adam Kennedy ($4.5) Padres assume $10m from Matt Holidays contract this year
Money works out to just about even.
I get a big outfield bat to boost a weakness of mine this year, get players to replace the positions I lose, and stock up my recently depleted minor league system (future trade chips??) with a few guys I am high on.

I confirm. Again, In this deal like the others I'm looking for young controllable talent. It's always hard to deal away an all star callibar bat but I really like Samardzija and the other pieces I upgraded.

Jesse, I agree that this can looks quite confusing. Padres and I have a ton of back and forth on this. I think, and I think Matt (Padres) would agree that Reddick and Samardjiza are the 2nd, and 3rd best players in this trade. An argument could be made that Delebar is even 4th. I do get Holiday, the best player in the deal at a good price this year, but will pay for it in 2 years when he’s 36+ with 2+ years left at $17m per I get Holliday, with the good (this years contract) and the bad (years 3 and 4 hopefully not year 2 or one), some replacement level talent for those positions I lost, and some solid prospects, for two 500pt a year proven talents that are cheap and controllable for years, and depth to the Padres, which he’s been trying to build since he took over the team. I think it’s a fair deal for both sides. I worry the complexity of it is scarring people from voting. I probably could have spelled it out better when I posted, but I hadn’t had my morning coffee yet and everything was still a little morning hazy

Approve. Hopefully for Sox this pays off now, because that contract is going to suck down the road.

Pass. I love it for the Sox, tho. Holliday is a machine and is extremely consistent while Castellanos can (and I think will) win at least 2 batting titles in his career. Great move for now and the future. Padres didnt do too shabby either. Reddick is criminally underrated, I think he does very well this year. Samadzjia showed yesterday that he is by no means still a project. I see the other pieces as minor to the entire scale of the deal. Good deal for San Diego, great for Boston, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? Again, pass!
