3/30/2014 - Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics have been busy over the last couple days adding depth to a roster that lost CF Michael Bourn, LHP Jeff Locke, RHP Mat Latos, LF Carlos Quentin, and RHP Jason Motte to injury this spring. The team started by adding outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Jean Machi on one year deals worth $300,000 dollars each. The team has also shown interest in three other free agents that could provide depth on the major league roster. The team also selected two players (Tommy Medica and Nick Martinez) that are major league ready in the minor league draft.
Jean Machi will join a bullpen that already includes Joaquin Benoit, Jose Valverde, and Donn Roach. Machi, 32, was 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 53 innings last season. He also had 11 holds. The bullpen is expected to see Jason Motte and Mike Adams work their way back from injuries as well, but have also expressed interest in free agent relievers Trevor Bell and Joe Beimel.

3/30/2014 - Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics announced a somewhat surprising move, releasing former closer Ryan Madson. Signed to a two-year deal worth 14 million dollars (with a club option) last offseason, Madson did not throw a pitch for Oakland, and will hit the free agency pool, saving the A's a total of 3.5 million dollars. The Athletics some have interest in bringing Madson back on a deal under 3.5 million dollars, but at this time, this is expected to be the end of Madson's time in Oakland.
The Athletics' bullpen gained some depth earlier today, when the team inked veteran reliever Jean Machi to a one year contract.

3/30/2014 - Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics have announced the signing of RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to a one year contract worth 5.1 million dollars. The Cuban defector is a wildcard to an Oakland team that has an interesting core already. He deepens an Oakland starting staff that already includes Mat Latos, Tyson Ross, Jacob Turner, Jeff Locke, Edinson Volquez, Nick Martinez, and Phil Hughes.
The deal is a low-risk, high reward contract. Gonzalez is only guaranteed 2.55 million dollars, but could end up being the midseason acquisition that puts the team over the top. Oakland has had problems in the past with international signings (Nakajima) but the team feels like Gonzalez could be worth the risk. The 27-year old will start the season on the disabled list, but is expected to contribute over the second half of the season.

3/31/2014 - Oakland Athletics
Continuing the quest to provide depth for the major league club on minimal salary after losing several players to free agency and releases at the beginning of the offseason, the Oakland Athletics have signed first baseman Travis Ishikawa to a one year contract worth $300,000 dollars with a club option for a second season. Ishikawa will open up the season on the bench for the A's, with Xavier Nady and Maicer Izturis also holding down spots.

Well, I think the free agency/arbitration rules are working. About 17 teams have less than $10MM in cap space available and around 23-25 teams have under $20MM of cap space available. There are still a couple who have huge amounts available but the league is beginning to even itself out. After one more year of free agency/arb it should really be apparent that our league has gotten much better in terms of financial ability for all teams. Good job guys
