Admittedly, I didn't even account for the fact that, if I were to let Stanton walk, I'd get a comp pick.
This time around, the deal is built around Marcell Ozuna, who at 24 years old, already has a 20+ homer season under his belt. Has huge upside, especially working under Barry Bonds, and is controllable for the long run. Again, Escobar is part of the deal, after placing as a top 10 at his position in our league last year. Affordable, controllable, productive. The first-rounder is still there.
Christian Walker is in the deal this time, and seems poised to be joining the Orioles in the coming weeks. Many seem to like his bat, and in MLB he was a popular trade target this year. Indians get another young outfielder (O's have him playing left) to plug in alongside Ozuna, and he's even more controllable.
Simmons is also in the trade now, and is a controllable reliever. Will be re-joining the Braves this summer, and posted a sub-3 ERA in his rookie year last year. Should get plenty of opportunities at saves and holds, as the Braves pen is in shambles at the moment. Relievers are a low-key source of points in this league, and he'll be valuable and controllable.
Garcia was a minor-league pick of mine, and figures to get looks in the Phillies pen at some point this year as well. Between him, Faulkner and Simmons, Indians get three controllable relievers that should be around for years to come.
Asher projects as a back-end starter. And while he may not be an ace in the making, pitching is incredibly valuable in our league because of the 11-start-a-week limit. Any time you get additional points, it's valuable, and getting a controllable young arm still adds solid value to a trade even if he's not a future ace.
So for Stanton, who is admittedly a fantastic talent, the Indians get two starting outfielders (Ozuna a potential stud in his own right, Walker will get regular at-bats when he's called up), 60% of an ESPN-league bullpen, a controllable third baseman, a future starter for the rotation, as well as a pair of draft picks to add more talent to the farm system.
Indians to confirm.
****EDIT:
Austin Gomber has been added to the trade in lieu of Luis Garcia. I feel this should only help the value going back to the Indians, as Gomber seems likely to make his debut at some point next year. He may not rank that highly, but the Cardinals always seem to thrive on making decent prospects into top-notch big leaguers. Gomber should be a quality pitcher at the next level, and pairing him with Asher gives Thomas two potential young, controllable starting pitchers coming back in the deal in addition to Faulkner, who may end up a starter at some point as well.
