GM's were selected based on the moves they made that improved them from year to year. Consequently, teams that were already powerhouses in the previous year were not considered above teams that came from the bottom to the top.
2018 American League GM of the Year
Caleb - GM, Chicago White Sox
2016 Record: 3-16
2017 Record: 16-3
While I've taken some heat that the GM's of the Year is simply the World Series participants, there's a definite case for both of the GM's from Chicago for the 2018 calendar year. The Chicago White Sox, led by GM Caleb in his second year, went from the basement (3-16) to the top of the American League (16-3) and a World Series Title. Quite the turnaround. The White Sox scored 6,844.5 points, made the playoffs for the first time in team history, and proved savvy on the trade market gathering elite hitters like Trea Turner, Mookie Betts, and Starling Marte during the season. In an ever improving AL Central and American League as a whole, the White Sox will have their work cut out for them to repeat in the AL. Regardless, this was a season to remember for Chicago White Sox fans. Fantastic work, Caleb!
2018 National League GM of the Year
Tanner - GM, Chicago Cubs
2016 Record: 8-11
2017 Record: 15-4
The other team from Chicago was led by Tanner, another GM in his second season of leadership over the Cubs franchise. The Cubbies went from 8-11 to 15-4, scoring 6,675.9 points and cruising through the difficult National League en route to the World Series. While the team ultimately fell to their hometown rivals, it was a successful season with Tanner at the helm. He wasn't afraid to make the big moves to shake things up, adding NL MVP Christian Yelich just before the trade deadline and also shuffling up an incredibly deep rotation. Moves like those paid off, resulting in the Cubs first ever World Series birth. While the cap-strapped Chicago will have quite the challenge ahead of them to keep this core together, 2018 was a terrific season and worthy of a GM of the Year award for Tanner. Great job, Tanner!
