Hi all,
I don’t love the 72 hour free agency period during the first week, but I understand why it is a thing and that off-season plans can change. What I really don’t like that bids made before the 72 hour threshold expires still must be the top bid for 72 hours. Two examples:
1. A bid was placed on James Paxton at approximately 2 AM CT on the final day of the 72 hour clock (6 hours before the change to 48). A bid placed on him 6 hours later would only need to last 48 hours. The update to the rule would see the bid converted to a 48 hour clock at the time the week turns over.
2. A bid was placed on Tommy Pham at approximately 7 PM CT on January 6th, under the old rules leaving the contract available to be bid on until 7 PM CT on the 9th. The 72 hour period ends on January 9th at 8 AM CT. As bids no longer need to be 72 hours at that point, I propose 8 AM would end bidding on the contract, as it has met the time period required to be held at the point in time it’s held.
Summary of my proposal: keep the 72 hour period but contracts offered before within a 0-24 hour remaining time period end at the time the clock changes, 25-48 hours end one day after the time changes.
I think it would be easier to keep track of if there are not two different timers running at the same time on contracts. I’ve included a poll above to gauge interest in changing the rule. If I need to clarify anything, I’m happy to do so!

I don't like your proposed idea, I feel like it's either 48 or 72, not blending the ideas together. My opinion.

I would rather see it be as it is now, because everyone understands the current format... OR just go to a completely 48 hour clock.
I'm still in favor of doing the restricted free agents separately from the rest of the free agents. We're still getting greatly skewed values because teams don't want to commit money to a restricted free agent and risk out on losing on other free agents.

Interesting idea with separating restricted FAs. By the restriction market being separate, do you mean that market opening early? I could see it working if there was a week or two of 48 hour bids for restricted free agents first, that way the market is set for them, then regular free agency starts with a 48 hour period after that. It could give enough time to get those FA off the market first and result in less skewed values.

Following up on a few of these...I don't think this proposal was ever finalized... if we could get that proposal finished on 16 votes being enough to pass anything, we could be close on this one too. It seems logical to me that we could still decide something like this for the up-coming free agency.

Three more votes on this to move to a 48 hour clock for all of off-season free agency.

This proposal has finally passed. Off-season free agency clock will be 48 hours standard. 24 hours in-season.
