Hey guys,
***PROPOSAL UPDATED, SEE COMMENTS BELOW***
Simple proposal. Under the current rule, there's nothing preventing a team from cutting their upcoming free agents in exchange for cap space to either.
A. Tank further.
B. Try to re-sign them to more longer-term team-friendly deals while everyone else is still tied up in cap space.
While this is a fun loophole... I don't see it as very realistic at all with what we're trying to do. The players should go to regular free agency in the winter, not just be re-signed at the end of the season to a new contract.
My proposal:
After the trade deadline, all free agent contracts can only be one year in length (extending to the end of the current season). An impending free agent that is released after the trade deadline cannot be bid on until the off-season.
Thoughts? Votes?
Thanks!

If you're not in favor... what's a good reason why not?

I don't think this should apply to players that exceed rookie limits for 1st time. I'd say 1 year deals for anybody that is cut, but then the question is do we allow option years? Cause if it's a strict, 1 year offer, then there's no point in even bidding on them. I have no problem with teams cutting expiring players for CAP space for the draft. Every team should be able to make all the picks they have. CAP shouldn't be a reason to miss a pick in amateur draft.

A better, adjusted rule would be: An impending free agent that is released after the trade deadline cannot be bid on until the off-season.

We've got 10 votes already...For those that vote no, it's helpful to know your reasoning so we're not just hung up on this idea.

Is the initial proposal what’s on the table or what Travis suggested?

Poll reset and updated so that teams can revote.
Please vote again even if you did previously.
THanks!

So does this only go for impending free agents or for all releases? Example: A pitcher who gets Tommy John but has another year left on their contract may be released and signed at better terms. Can we just close the loop and state a player that is released after the trade deadline can not be bid on until off-season free agency?

I concur with Blue Jays. At very least, this new proposal is a good solution in short term, and if anyone has a better idea later we can look at it again.

Thoughts? Votes? Thanks! When has anyone ever done this to tank further? Why is it an issue to cut and risk losing them for the opportunity to sign to a longer term deal? Any problematic examples to provide? To not allow them to be bid on til after the season requires tracking (what if someone cuts Phil Gosselin after being DFA’d, who then later signs with another team to be productive again? Just an example…) I really fail to see what problem we are trying to solve here and why (B) is a bad thing. Also, how is (A) different than Caleb and Sean not spending $90M or whatever during FA?

This is all part of the strategic advantage that Caleb and Sean have by not spending any offseason free agent money. They can sign all the Festa’s they want
