Week 2 Power Rankings
Same as Last Week Tier
1. (1) Nationals – Great performances from Adley Rutschman, Brandon Lowe, and Graham Ashcraft. Possible trap game next week against the Mets with 2-start Spencer Strider, and 9 projected starts from his pitchers.
2. (2a) Mariners – The Mariners got a scare this week, but the better team ultimately won. Not much more Phil can do to this team. I’m sure he’s excited about his cakewalk to an AL West crown.
3. (2b) Giants – Das didn’t even have to drag himself out of bed to win his matchup with the Rockies. Big game next week against the undefeated Dodgers.
4. (4) Blue Jays – Sean Murphy crushed it this week. Good ol’ consistent Stephen. Gotta love him.
The Goes Both Ways Tier
5. (6) Dodgers – Very nice victory this week for the Dodgers versus a tough divisional foe. Watch out for Scott. Game of the week against the Giants starting tomorrow.
6. (5) Cardinals – I moved the Cards down a spot despite winning. A few key injuries have left Nik scraping the bottom of the trade barrel trying to find a SS to replace Corey Seager. Stanton just hit the IL today and it looks like he’s out several weeks. Verlander and Fried are coming back soon, could he dangle some SP as trade bait for offensive help?
7. (10) Reds – What a Sunday for the Reds. They outscored the Marlins by 70+ points to cap off an incredible comeback. I’m sure he’s glad to have Luis Castillo and Gerrit Cole on his team. There are still some question marks on the offense but with that pitching rotation, they should keep him in the thick of things until Jose Altuve comes back.
Don’t Shoot, We’re The Good Guys Tier
8. (11) Orioles – The Orioles had a tough challenge in facing the two-time defending champion Mariners and, despite a great effort, they just didn’t have enough oomph to win. Mike still has a good-looking team.
9. (7) Marlins – The Marlins completely collapsed today…has anyone checked in on Travis to make sure he’s ok? When I wrote this up before games started this morning, I was positive the game was wrapped up for the Marlins. I guess that’s why they play the game.
10. (8) Diamondbacks – The Diamondbacks must not have heard they were facing a really good Dodgers team. It was mostly a blowout all week. But at least they got Seiya Suzuki back. Kyle should make some moves.
The Lots of Questions Tier
11. (12) Guardians – The Guardians picked up a much-needed win but his schedule the next two weeks pits him against his two new and improved division rivals, the White Sox and Tigers. Thomas needs to bring his A game and he needs his starting pitchers to last more than their current average of 4.4 innings per start.
12. (13) Angels – Imagine how much higher this team would rank if they just went out and added a few mediocre bullpen pieces and a part-time third baseman. It would easily be a top 8 team. Unfortunately, he’s too busy living his best life of gambling and hookers out in Vegas. I’d trade places with him…I would.
13. (15) Tigers – What a big time win this week for the Tigers over the White Sox. Jon has a sneaky good squad sitting atop the AL Central but he needs to seriously consider adding a couple Starting Pitchers, he has the assets to do it. His schedule is a little tricky in the early going with several coin flip matchups. This is a 3-Team race in the division, but he’s already 1-0 in those matchups.
14. (16) Astros – It wasn’t the best of wins, but it was a win that Husband Will needed to have. He has a gimme game next week before facing the Angels and Mariners. Musgrove should be back by then, but he's been coming up in trade rumors lately. This team might look different at the end of next week.
What Should I Do Next Tier
15. (9) White Sox – He lost a nailbiter to division rival Detroit this week in a game he needed to have. Another injury to a shortstop in Chicagoland casts a cloud over the staying power of this squad. Kyle Farmer took a ball to the face (giggity) and he’s out for the foreseeable future. With such few tradable assets, the Sox can il afford to lose any more starting players.
16. (18) Cubs – My beautiful son is 2-0. Praise the man upstairs…in the broadcasting booth…for giving Tanner the strength to believe. He’s already in the market for MLB pieces to try and compete with the Reds and Cardinals. He better move quick because he faces both over the next 2 week.
17. (20) Braves – What a big time showing by the Braves after getting torched in my Week 1 rankings. I guess it lit a fire under Jared’s ass and he rallied his troops to a victory against the Mets.
18. (19) Mets – It was going to be tough for the Mets overcome such a great performance from the Braves this week. It doesn’t get any easier next week against the Nationals.
19. (14) Rangers – What a tough loss for Ahmed. I thought he had enough ammo to beat Will this week. With an almost impossible game to win against the Mariners, he’ll be in a tough position moving forward.
The Confused Tier
20. (17) Padres – The injury to Jeffrey Springs, who was off to a scorching hot start, is going to be felt by the Padres for months. It was an unfortunate injury to a guy who was a feel-good story the first few turns through the rotation. Sell Hard.
21. (21) Brewers – The Brewers are still sitting there with tradable assets. Gaylord may just be waiting for the herd of buyers and sellers to start separating themselves before making a move, but the injury to Brandon Woodruff might scare him into selling off pieces before any other injuries occur.
22. (22) Rockies – Another week, another disappointing loss by the Rockies. They’re sitting at 0-2 in what might be the first time in years (someone fact check me). He could possibly squeak out wins the next two weeks to get back to .500 but then it’s right back into the gauntlet. Will he sell and jump into a rebuild or will he hang on to hope for just a bit longer?
23. (26) Royals – Not much going on in KC but the Royals snuck out a win vs the Padres and they’ve got a nice group of outfielders that I could see Bill trading.
24. (24) Rays – The arrival and first game of Taj Bradley should give the Rays something to be happy about.
25. (25) Twins – The offense has performed quite well. That’s about all that’s going on with this team.
26. (23) Athletics – The A’s continue to exist. Should they trade Lindor and Blackmon? Yes. Will they? Not likely
If I Could Rank All Of These Teams Last, I Would Tier
27. (28) Red Sox – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
28. (27) Pirates – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
29. (29) Yankees – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
30. (30) Phillies – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
