Week 8 Power Rankings
World Series Favorites
1. (1b) Mariners 8-0 – What a performance by the Mariners. They are the new number 1 in the power rankings, deservedly so.
2. (1a) Nationals 8-0 – The Nationals won against the Cardinals. It wasn’t pretty and there were some poor managerial decisions. They’ve got the division wrapped up already so they don’t need to make any irrational trades. Big matchup against the undefeated Cubs next week.
The Contenders
3. (3) Cubs 8-0 – The run continues in spite of a subpar performance. The Cubs went out and acquired the leagues best battery, Ben Lively and the unstoppable Luke Maile from his upcoming opponent.
4. (6) Giants 6-2 – The Giants picked up an easy W this week. They face the Braves next week before a brutal 3 week stretch versus the Astros, Cardinals, and Reds.
5. (7) Blue Jays 6-2 – The Blue Jays picked up a much needed win, especially with the Orioles knocking off the Guardians.
6. (8) White Sox 6-2 – The White Sox steamrolled the Red Sox but the real news in Chicagoland was the acquisition of Adolis Garcia and Dansby Swanson.
7. (5) Cardinals 6-2 – Heartbreaker for the Cardinals. They led this one from the first pitch on Monday until about 5pm on Sunday. They now fall to two games behind the Cubs and will be rooting for the Nationals next week as they head to Chicago.
8. (4) Guardians 6-2 – The Guardians dropped a big game against the Orioles and fall into a 3-way tie with the White Sox and Tigers.
9. (11) Orioles 5-3 – The Orioles with a nice W against the red-hot Guardians keeps them just a game behind the Blue Jays.
One or Two Moves to Get Into Contender Status
10. (10) Dodgers 5-3 – The Dodgers beat the Mets but I think they’re in need of some pitching help.
11. (13) Tigers 6-2 – Don’t look now but the Tigers have won 4 in a row and find themselves in a 3-way tie in the AL Central.
12. (12) Reds 5-3 – There was no shot at beating the Mariners. Even though the Reds were one of the top scorers this week. So frustrating.
13. (15) Angels 6-2 – Let’s Go Angels.
14. (14) Diamondbacks 5-3 – The Diamondbacks with an underwhelming victory against the lowly Pirates. Not impressed.
15. (9) Astros 5-3 – Tough loss for the Astros who are on the outside looking in for a playoff spot. Is it time to sell off those short-term assets? My gut says Will can’t pull the trigger.
Waiting For 2024
16. (16) Rockies 4-4 – There is no quit in this team. Back to .500 and 4 of the next 5 matchups are winnable. He's made it known he's been trying to sell but I know he's got to be saying to himself...
17. (22) Rays 5-3 – Is this the worst 5-3 team in league history? There’s a legit shot at 11 wins for this team. That’d probably leave them a game out of the playoff spot, but what a story it’d be if they snuck in.
18. (17) Marlins 3-5 – 4 straight losses for the Marlins. What a disappointing season thus far for last year’s Cinderella story.
19. (18) Rangers 3-5 – The Rangers made a big move this week trading for #1 prospect Jordan Walker. It cost him 2 of his best MLB assets to get him. Also, they lost to the Tigers.
20. (19) Braves 3-5 – Tough loss to the Rockies and the Braves stay in a 3-way tie in the NL East. They're all but out of the playoff race.
21. (23) Padres 2-6 – The Padres plucked a win away from the reeling Marlins. I like this team; they just can’t catch a break. They are the NL version of the Rangers.
22. (20) Mets 3-5 – The Mets find themselves in no-man’s land right now. Not really good, not really bad. Tough place to be but there are still some pieces for the future.
23. (21) Brewers 2-6 – A loss to the Giants has the Brewers sliding further down the standings. Still waiting for the sell-off. They kind of got it started by dealing Yuli Gurriel this week.
If I Could Rank All Of These Teams Last I Would Tier
24. (26) Athletics 1-7 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
25. (24) Royals 2-6 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would.
26. (25) Twins 0-8 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
27. (27) Red Sox 1-7 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
28. (28) Pirates 0-8 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
29. (29) Yankees 0-8 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
30. (30) Phillies 0-8 – If I could rank all of these teams last, I would
Game of The Week
8-0 Cubs vs 8-0 Nationals
There isn’t any other game that carries the hype that this game has this week. Mother vs Son. Master vs Apprentice. 2 Guys, 1 Stump. However you want to spin their relationship, these two gents couldn’t be more excited to face each other as undefeated ballclubs. When the season started, not a soul on earth would have predicted this matchup to be of any significance, but, here we are. The winner will have a two game lead for the #1 seed in the NL. The Nationals appear to be the heavy favorite, but the Cubs have defied the odds all season long. Can they do it again?
