Hey guys,
A common action we've seen over the years is a team with loads of cap space signing players, trading them with cap coverage to other teams, and then jumping right back into the bidding with their cleared cap space from the signing they just made.
Example: Team A signs player X to a 3 year contract at $40m per year. Team A trades that player the day they are signed to Team B with $20m in cap coverage. With $20m in cap coverage now created again and assets gained from the trade, Team A then signs another player to a 2 year, $20m per contract.
I have always found this to be pretty unrealistic. My simple proposal is only to not allow teams to trade players signed in January until February 1, or whatever date the league chose, to create a more realistic free agency for everyone. This would not be something that affected the current free agency, but future off-seasons.
Thoughts?
Alex

It's a thing where it's the argument of should we change because this is how the real mlb does it, or do we not change because it's not really causing a problem?
I look at the trades from last FA to see how frequent this happened. There were a lot of trades last January but only 4 that involved a player that was recently signed.
Michael A. Taylor (He was an r-tag) Mets signed him but A's matched. Mets traded a 5th to A's for him.
Stroman signed by Pirates for 21M and traded with Kirby Yates with Cap coverage to Reds for Brock Porter and a 1st
Wade Miley signed by Yankees for 16M and traded with Cap Coverage to Rockies with a spec swap of Chourio going to Rockies and Xavier Edwards going to Yankees
Bumgarner signed by Phillies for 15.3M and traded with Cap Coverage to Rockies for Chourio, a 3rd, and a 9th.

Generally speaking this is an opportunity for rebuilding teams to use their cap to get farm assets that should in theory help them get better quicker. Conversely it gives competing teams with less cap an opportunity to use farm assets to get better now. Which in theory should shrink their competitive window.

I think this happened more the year prior. I could think up tons of opportunities for rebuilding teams to help them. Why do they need this avenue to get better? This is the same deal with unlimited cap coverage per year. I'm not just looking at what benefits one team in a given off-season with these ideas, but what makes the league most fun for the whole league over the course of time. I don't think allowing teams to jump in, out, and back into free agency within a one week span is realistic, fun for bidding competition, or helpful for all 30 teams trying to plan and bid in free agency.

Forgot what a nice deal that Bumgarner trade was. I am a fan of this. I understand this can be a crucial process for a rebuilding team, but it results in pretty ridiculous contracts that end up being eaten by said team. This would somewhat have the same effect as limiting cap coverage that could be offered in sign and trades.

I am not a huge proponent of it, but I don't believe there should be a rule preventing it.
