Individual Matchup Reviews
Houston Astros vs Chicago Cubs
Final Score: Houston - 407.8, Chicago - 292.1
Leading Scorers:
Houston Astros - Steven Strasburg - 39.7
Chicago Cubs - Tommy Hunter - 32.2
In their matchup the last week, the Houston Astros came away with a win. The Cubs, despite being ranked in the bottom teams of the NL, put up a surprisingly good performance against the Astros fueled behind surprises Tommy Hunter and Casey Kotchman. But it proved to not be enough as the Astros had one of the top performances of the week in joining the 400 club.
St Louis Cardinals vs Pittsburgh Pirates
Final Score - St. Louis - 367.9, Pittsburgh - 147.9
Leading Scorers:
St. Louis Cardinals - Yadier Molina - 48
Pittsburgh Pirates - Kevin Correia - 32.3
In what came out to be one of the biggest blowout of the week, the Cardinals crushed the Pittsburgh Pirates by over 200 points! This came as little surprise as the Cardinals are predicted to take the NL Central, while the Pirates were predicted to be the cellar dwellers in the same division.
Milwaukee Brewer vs Cincinnati Reds
Final Score - Cinncinnati Reds - 389.8, Milwaukee Brewers - 287.3
Leading Scorers:
Cincinnati Reds - Aroldis Chapman - 43.3
Milwaukee Brewers - Ryan Braun - 35
In a battle of the NL Central, the Reds managed to get the victory this week. Fueled by their overall balance on both ends, and a stunning performance by Aroldis Chapman, the Reds came out of the gate firing. The Brewers, without an owner for this matchup, took the loss while still putting up a respectable amount of points. The Brewers will be a team to watch with it's new owner Mike on board at the controls.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Francisco Giants
Final Score - Arizona Diamondbacks - 370, San Francisco Giants - 221.1
Leading Scorers:
Arizona Diamondbacks - Ian Kennedy - 43.1
San Francisco Giants - Chris Young - 42
In probably the easiest victory all this week, the Diamondbacks came away with the win. The Diamondbacks put up a good amount of points against the team that was supposed to challenge for the NL title this year. But with the Giant owner being a no show for this matchup, the Giants came away with one of the worst outcomes of the week. A new owner may be needed on the horizon for the Giants to prosper yet again.
Miami Marlins vs New York Mets
Final Score - New York Mets - 331.7, Miami Marlins - 231.1
Leading Scorers:
New York Mets - R.A. Dickey - 43.7
Miami Marlins - Lance Lynn - 44.3
In perhaps the lowest scoring game this week in the NL, the Mets came out with the win despite only putting up 331.7 points. Thanks to a very deep pitching staff and veteran Raul Ibanez, the Mets stayed enough points ahead of the Marlins to win. The Marlins, with one of the lowest scores of the week, had a dysmal effort by their offense, which led to their own demise this week. The hope for the Marlins is that Carlos Quentin returns from the DL sooner rather than later to revive a stagnant offense.
Philadelphia Phillies vs Atlanta Braves
Final Score - Philadelphia Phillies - 492.3, Atlanta Braves - 262.1
Leading Scorers:
Philadelphia Phillies - Matt Kemp - 73.5
Atlanta Braves - Derek Lowe - 41.6
In by far the biggest blowout of the week, the Phillies came out with the win. The Braves, despite being in rebuilding mode, put up a fair amount of points that against some other teams would have won. But unlucky for them, they came across the Goliaths of the NL. The champion Phillies continued their dominance carried over from last season despite losing Jacoby Ellsbury for the next 4-6 week. If the team holds up, it's looking like another championship season in Philadelphia.
San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals
Final Score - San Diego Padres - 399.1, Washington Nationals - 382.4
Leading Scorers:
San Diego Padres - Carlos Pena - 45
Washington Nationals - Josh Hamilton - 47.5
In what came out to be the closest game of the week, the Padres managed to squeak out the victory despite an attempted comeback by the Nationals on the final day of the series. The Padres, underrated by most coming into the season, have established themselves as the darkhore of the NL with this victory. Nobody was expecting teh Padres to pull this off, even the Padres themselves! The Nationals will have to put themselves together after a very tough loss in their opening series. But despite losing, the Nationals eyes are still on the playoffs with their star studded lineup.
Matchup Of The Week
Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers
Final Score: Colorado Rockies - 412, Los Angeles Dodgers - 383.3
Leading Scorers:
Colorado Rockies - CJ Wilson - 43.2
Los Angeles Dodgers - Kyle Lohse - 42.9
In a matchup of the NL West, the Rockies pick up the win in the game of the week. This matchup was close down until the final day, but the Rockies balanced attack proved too much for the unheralded Dodgers in the end. Although the Rockies have the more name recognizable lineup, the Dodgers managed to stay with the Rockies all week. Which came as a surprise to me, and many others. The NL West is starting to look very interesting where one of 4 teams may take the division.
