Individual Matchup Reviews
Houston Astros v Cinncinnati Reds
Final Score: Houston - 288.4, Cinncinnati - 269.7
Leading Scorers:
Houston Astros - Steven Strasburg - 35.3
Cincinnati Reds - Johny Cueto - 38.4
In what could end up being the battle of the NL Central, the Astros managed to squeak a victory out in what came to be the closest match of the week. The Astros went into the last day up by a comfortable 50 points, but the Reds managed to slim the gap down to 20, making the Astros very nervous. What spoiled the Reds comeback was the postponement of Daniel Bard's start to a later date because of a rain out. If it weren't for this, the Reds just may have taken the win.
The Astros will be on cruise control next week as they face the last place team in the Pirates.
The Reds will look to rebound against the Cubs this following week.
St Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs
Final Score - St. Louis - 226.2, Chicago - 180.8
Leading Scorers:
St. Louis Cardinals - Tommy Hanson - 31.2
Chicago Cubs - Nick Hundley - 29.5
In yet another divisional matchup, the Cardinals continued to climb up the NL Central ranks with a win over the Cubs. The Cubs had an early lead in the first half of the week, but they just could not sustain it. Although they still put up point everyday, the Cardinals went brutal on the Cubs. In a three day period, the Cardinals came back with a resurgence where they outscored the Cubs by close to 100 points. This is what put the final nail in the coffin for baseball's beloved Cubs.
In the coming week, the Cardinals will be one half to the game of the week. They will yet again battle it out in the NL Central against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cubs as well will battle it out intra-division style. They pulled the unlucky straw in getting a matchup against the Reds.
Milwaukee Brewer vs Pittsburgh Pirates
Final Score - Milwaukee Brewers - 249.8, Pittsburgh Pirates - 137.6
Leading Scorers:
Milwaukee Brewers - Michael Bourn - 40
Pittsburgh Pirates - Jose Veras - 23.4
In what came to be one of the most lopsided matchup of the week, the Brewers steamrolled their NL Central foes for the win this week. This will mark the first win for the Brewers new owner, and the outlook from here on out looks promising. On the opposite end of the spectrum however, the Pirates continued their quest to collect the Morgan Ensberg award! For the second consecutive week, the Pirates have been the lowest scoring team in the NL. This slow start for the Pirates may have the owner looking to shake things up sooner rather than later.
Next week, the Brewers will get their first time in the spotlight in the game of the week. They play their NL Central foes in the Cardinals.
As for the Pirates, they happen to pair up with a divisional foe in the Houston Astros.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Los Angeles Dodgers
Final Score - Arizona Diamondbacks - 244.3, Los Angeles Dodgers - 198.2
Leading Scorers:
Arizona Diamondbacks - Ricky Romero - 43.2
Los Angeles Dodgers - Kyle Lohse - 40.2
In what was my most anticipated matchup of the week, the Diamondbacks took the air out of the lungs of the Dodgers to take the win. Fueled by the 1-2 punch of Ricky Romero and Ian Kennedy, the Diamondbacks pulled away on the final day in what was a very close match the day prior.
The Dodgers were within 5 points heading into the last day, which means a victory wasn't out of the question. But, being (and branded) the most unlucky team in the NL, and perhaps the league, the Dodgers failed to keep up with the Diamondbacks on the final day.
In the upcoming week, the undefeated Diamondbacks will pull up against another undefeated foe in the Rockies.
The Dodgers will look to get their first win of the season in the coming week against the Mets.
Miami Marlins vs Washington Nationals
Final Score - Washington Nationals - 221.2, Miami Marlins - 152
Leading Scorers:
Washington Nationals - Josh Hamilton - 44.5
Miami Marlins - Dan Haren - 30.2
In a matchup that was won out of the gates, the Nationals took the lead early and never looked back. Despite lackluster performances from star Tim Lincecum, the Nationals were able to hold out this week, mainly because of star OF Josh Hamilton, who carried the team on his back this week.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Marlins continued to dissapoint for a consecutive week. They put up another loss because of a lackluster offense. Their pitching staff is one of the best regarded in the NL, but it won't do much for you when you don't have the firepower and balance on offense. Some major changes may be needed in Miami for the ship to be righted.
In their matchup next week, the Nationals will square up against the Braves in a battle of the singles.
For the Marlins, it looks like the losing streak may continue as they battle against the defending champions, the Phillies.
Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Mets
Final Score - Philadelphia Phillies - 335.5, New York Mets - 204.6
Leading Scorers:
Philadelphia Phillies - Yovanni Gallardo - 32.2
New York Mets - Dillon Gee - 23.4
In a matchup where it was probably over before it began, the Phillies took the life out of the Mets early and took the win. Not much else can be said about the Phillies, other than the fact that they are a team of demigods. Despite injuries to Chase Utley and Jacoby Ellsbury, the team still continues to put out the most points every week. It might be time already to book the Phillies a ticket to the World Series.
The Mets got very unlucky in their second matchup of the season. To be paired up with the Phillies is almost an instant stroke in the loss column. But despite losing, the Mets put out an effort that could have beaten a number of teams this week. Next week, the Mets will look to regain their momentum from their win in the opening week of the season.
Next week the Phillies will face off in a battle of the NL East. They will play the winless Marlins.
The Mets will look to turn the tables next week as they also play a winless team in the Dodgers.
San Francisco Giants vs Atlanta Braves
Final Score - Atlanta Braves - 209.4, San Francisco Giants - 154.9
Leading Scorers:
Atlanta Braves - Phillup Humber - 43.4
San Franciso Giants - Mark Buehrle - 25.3
Is that perfection I see? Yes! I believe it is! Fueled by the perfect game thrown from Phillip Humber, the Braves took the win against the Giants. The Braves came back from their shortcomings in the prior week to get the win in good fashion. Fueled by Mr. Perfecto, the Braves pulled away in the final two days of the matchup to get an easy win.
The Giants however, still find themselves in dismay from what the previous owner did to the team. But there is hope on the horizon. New team owner Brandon will look to turn this team around in the coming weeks. The Giants are now an official team to watch, as they do have the starpower to compete!
Next week, the Braves land the Nationals in what should be a very interesting matchup.
The Giants, next week, will pull up against the NL Dark Horses in the an Diego Padres.
Matchup Of The Week
Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres
Final Score: Colorado Rockies - 326.5, San Diego Padres - 255.1
Leading Scorers:
Colorado Rockies - Evan Longoria - 37
San Diego Padres - Cory Luebke - 49.2
In our matchup of the week, the Rockies started hot and didn't look back as they took the win. The Padres put up a valiant effort, but in the end being outscored by over 100 points in the middle of the week did them in. Some roster tinkering may be in order for the Padres as their pitching staff didn't hold up to their explosive offense.
The Rockies on the other hand, took their second consecutive game of the week in stunning fashion. Fueled by their talented rotation, the Rockies pulled the carpet from underneath the Padres feet early. One question is still looming however. Will the Rockies trade of CarGo to the Giants come back to bite them when they will likely go up against the Phillies in the NLCS? Stay tuned to find out.
The Padres will look to right the curve this week when they face off against the winless Giants.
The Rockies get yet again another tough matchup. This week they face off in a match of the undefeated's against the Diamondbacks.
