Hey guys,
I recently went through the rules and tried to clarify some things. Here's what came of my search, with some thoughts for discussion. I'd hope to get some discussion going about these rules for the improvement of the league. Here we go:
---- 300k Year 1 - When our players reach what we call "year one" of prospection protection, by our rules, they're supposed to be paid 400k. However, these players reach 100 ABs or 40 IPs for the first time during the season, where it's nearly impossible to keep track of and make a in-season change on the Spreadsheets. Consequently, I think it would be wise to simply change our league rules to say that a player is paid 300k in first year of Prospect Protection that leads to arbitration.
---- DEFENSIVE POINTS? Do we want to consider adding a few categories of defensive points? This would add value to players like... Andrelton Simmons. They aren't terrific offensive players, but they stick with teams because of their defense. This would give their defensive talent some value in our league. The categories that are offered on ESPN for defensive scoring are: Fielding Chances, Put Outs, Assists, Outfield Assists, Errors, Double Plays Turned. I'm not sure which of these would be best to implement (errors would be beneficial, as it does penalize poor fielders), but I wanted to get discussion going.
---- Removing GIDP? We currently subtract one point from any player that grounds into a double play. This extremely specific negative scoring isn't exactly consistent with how we score the rest of the league. I'm proposing we potentially remove this negative scoring, as a player doesn't receive any negative for a usual groundout.
--- Pitching Scoring? I think a problem we have with pitching scoring is that we value wins and losses too much (8 points a win, -4 points a loss), and don't have quality starts as a way to get points. A quality start is defined as when a starter goes 6 innings or more and gives up 3 earned runs or less. I think this is a better way to value pitchers, rather than wins/losses which accounts too much for how well the MLB team's offense produces. Thoughts?
--- Lower the cap? This isn't something I'm necessarily thinking... "We need to do this." But it's simply a suggestion. If we lower the cap, this would cause teams to have to think more with how they allocate their money. It would also help to spread the talent around. We don't seem to be having too much of a problem with spreading the talent in our brief view of this season, but last season and seasons before the lack of parity has been obvious. Thoguhts?
---- Lowering to 1 Restriction Tag? Simply suggestion here... removing one restriction tag to make more free agents "available". We had a handful of free agents that were given restriction tags that weren't even offered a bid by another team... nor were re-signed by their former team. What's the point of offering a restriction tag if you have no interest in retaining the player?
----72 hour trade window? Perhaps we should extend the trading window to 72 hours... or instead of a time limit, make it so teams must reach a certain amount of approves/vetoes. I think teams NEED to be giving reasons for why they approve/veto. This is vital to the trading health of our league. A possible solution to this would be selecting a trading board? In which... 7-10 owners would be responsible for voting on all trades in our league. Thoughts on this?
---- Finally... What does this mean...? "One exemption involves international free agents (IFAs) coming to MLB from foreign professional leagues. Players who are at least 23 years old and who have played in a recognized professional league, such as Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball or Cuba's Serie Nacional, will be exempt. Beginning in 2014-15, IFAs must have four years of pro experience to be exempt. These exempt players will be available via our leagues free agency process sometime towards the end of February each off season."
I don't get the part at all about four years of pro experience... and don't remember writing this rule. Any help?
