Hey all,
I'm sure anyone who has been fairly active lately has been monitoring this whole Derek Fisher incident, which I hope comes to an end because it recently led to Kings forward Matt Barnes paying a visit to the Base Knock League Offices looking for a fight out of a misunderstanding. It was unpleasant to deal with.
In all seriousness though, one thing I want to encourage you all to do, and that I will do myself this coming week, is to check the spelling of every player on your roster. I, for example, noticed today that shortstop prospect Calten Daal is misspelled on my roster, and is currently spelled "Carlton." I think it's because I spelled it that way when I drafted him, which is my fault. However, good to know, because he's a solid prospect, and it'd suck to see someone else draft him and then there be an issue surrounding it.
I say this not to call out any one person involved with that whole Fisher issue. It's an unfortunate thing that was bound to happen at some point. The fact that this is one of the few issues we've had in six seasons is something I think we can be proud of, and a hat tip to all the guys who do a lot. Despite the league staff titles I've held throughout my years here, I admittedly haven't contributed a whole lot due to schedule constraints, and am making it a priority of mine to try and pitch in more starting in the offseason.
That all being said, something I want to encourage every one of you to do is to go on your Google doc some time this week, and just scroll down the list. Check the math on your salary cap, make sure all your players look right, and I'd also recommend going through and spell-checking the name of every player in your minor league system as well. For some prospects, obviously it'll be pretty simple. But if you've never heard of the guy, plug his name into Baseball Reference or Google or something of the sort. For all you know, he's tearing up the high minors and could be a big leaguer before you know it. Better to catch it now than to have it become an issue down the road.
Again, I say this not to call out anyone or throw anyone under the bus. The Derek Fisher incident is just an unfortunate mishap that hopefully won't happen again going forward. But, I think it does serve as an incentive for everyone to go and take some precautionary measures with their rosters, and just make sure everything looks good.
Thanks all for another great season. It looks like my Orioles will be suffering a late-season collapse, but I'm looking forward to the Week 19 drama in the National League as well as the Indians and Twins fighting it out for the AL Central Title, with the Red Sox fighting the other for the final AL Wild Card spot. Best of luck to everyone in the postseason!
