RELEASES AND BUYOUTS
MLB RELEASES
Teams may release a player by posting the player to be released and his current contract in the "Releases" board. Teams must pay 50% of that players contract for each year remaining on his contract. This will be kept track of on the Official Rosters.
If a player is released while having a team option on a future year of his contract, the option year will only be assessed a 25% release penalty, half of the regular year penalty. This does not affect a team's ability to freely accept or decline an option in the off-season of the option year for no penalty. Only team options in future seasons will be assessed a release penalty.
MINOR LEAGUE & TEAM CONTROL PLAYER RELEASES
Minor league players may be cut without penalty. A released minor league player is then eligible to be drafted. A minor league player is defined as a player who has not reached 130 AB or 50 IP, 10 GS, or 20 RA in a season. Players in their first three years of team control can also be released without penalty.
NEW OWNER FREE RELEASE
Every new owner is entitled to one free release without penalty upon entry into the league. The new owner has one week from the date his ownership is announced to post this free release. This release may be used on either a player's contract, an amount covered on a traded player, or a previously released players salary penalty.
MEDICAL RETIREMENT BUYOUT
If a player retires under the age of 30 for medical reasons, teams have the option to perform a special medical retirement buyout. Teams will pay 50% of that players salary for one season, and all other remaining years on the contract are considered void. This medical retirement buyout is final and cannot be reversed. This rule does not apply to players who retire for other reasons or choose to play overseas.
