Note: I'm using MLB Pipeline prospect rankings and FV grade for this post because that's what Das uses for the league rankings
1.9 - Dereck Rodriguez, SP, SF
Originally drafted as an OF in 2011 but converted to Pitcher during the 2014 season. He was called up early this season and as of this writing has 10 QS out of 12 GS. When you're drafting a guy you hope that some day they'll have big league value in which you can use them in this league. To be able to draft a guy with the 9th pick that's already performing well in the majors and looks like he could be a stable rotation piece for years is amazing.
1.21 - Tirso Ornelas, OF, SD
Team Rank: 16
FV: 50
I had him on my radar from the MiLB draft and the only thing he'd done in that time is improve his value. Great tools and I love what he's doing in A ball as an 18 year old.
1.23 - Josh James, SP, HOU
Team Rank: 6
FV: 50
He's been very effective in Triple A and on most teams he probably would've already had a shot in the majors. The risk is that he moves to the bullpen, however the upside for a high K rotational piece makes it worth the risk.
1.28 - Luis Rengifo, SS, LAA
Team Rank: 11
FV: 45
Very good defensively with an ability to put the bat on the ball. I think he has a solid career ahead of him as a UT bat that plays most days. He's 21 and batting .315 in Triple A.
1.30 - Mason Denaburg, SP, WAS
Team Rank: 4
FV: 50
Big framed pitcher who throws his fastball in the mid to high 90s. Has a good amount of upside and could be a top of the rotation arm if he puts it all together. I personally had him as the best MLB Draft Player on the board and felt there was a good size gap in his upside compared to others available at the time.
2.5 - Luis Oviedo, SP, CLE
Team Rank: 10
FV: 50
Another young big bodied SP. He's 19 and recently got moved up to A ball. Scouting reports speak to mid rotation upside and the numbers so far have backed it up.
2.9 - Shervyn Newton, SS, NYM
Team Rank: 16
FV: 45
He's a big switch hitter that despite his size has managed to show good defense at the SS position. He's shown that he has good contact skills and I'm hoping more power comes when he starts filling out.
2.19 - Tony Gonsolin, SP, LAD
Team Rank: 14
FV: 50
He was a project coming out of college as he was a two way player. He's improved each season and this year has made an even bigger jump in terms of consistent performance.
2.23 - Jordan Balazovic, SP, MIN
Team Rank: 30
FV: 45
19 year old who's performing well in A ball. He's 6'4" and has seen an increase in his velocity as he's filled out. He's a long term project that could be a solid rotational piece or an effective RP.
2.25 - Emilio Vargas, SP, ARI
Team Rank: 14
FV: 45
He had been dominant in High A ball before a call up to Double A. He's been in the minors for a long time and has slowly progressed. Similar outlook to Balazovic but he's a couple of years further down the line.
3.28 - Tyler Phillips, SP, TEX
Team Rank: 14
FV: 50
He may be the only Rangers SP prospect that has consistently performed this whole season. He's another big body pitcher and has a good set of pitches he works with. The Rangers need young SP and he very well could be the answer to that problem.
5.25 - Santiago Espinal, SS, TOR
Team Rank: 24
FV: 45
He reminds me alot of Luis Rengifo in that he has a good ability to make contact while also being a good defender. He's in double A right now and I think he's got a chance to be an everday UT guy once he gets the chance.
That's all the picks I made this year and my personal breakdown of each one. We'll see in a year or two how well I did.
