Hey guys,
Tim brought up a hole in our rules that needs to be addressed. Thanks for the catch, Tim!
When a player finishes a season and enters free agency and is eligible for a compensation pick, but then retires and is unsigned (or just remains unsigned), should the team that lost him receive a compensation pick even though he was un-signed?
Please vote/comment with ideas. After spelling out it, I would say no... being the reason you're compensated is because another team is signing the player away from you.
Thanks!
Alex

The rule is as follows:
“ Type A Free Agents lost will receive Comp A Round draft pick as compensation in order of potential tag value. The Comp A Round will take place between Rounds 1-2.”
The word lost is defined as follows : To be deprived of or cease to have
Regardless of whether a player is signed by a BK team or not, if they are not on the previous owners roster through the duration of the following season, it would meet the criteria of losing a player. Thereby awarding a compensation draft pick.
At the very least, the previous owner would have to refrain from signing said player for the duration of the following season to be awarded the comp pick in that upcoming draft.

It just doesn't make sense with what this rule is aiming for... if you can literally go sign the guy for the minimum, I don't think that warrants a COMP pick.

13-3. Moving forward with this and fixing the rules so that it will be clear in the future.
