The Diamondbacks have agreed to trade: Gabriel Gonzalez, OF 2023: Spec Mitch Haniger, OF 2023: 11.7M Year 7 of 7 B arb to the Royals in exchange for: Marcus Semien, 2B 2023: 32.8M 24.6M in Cap coverage I've been hesitant to trade my top farm pieces because of what I have viewed as a low chance of making noise in the playoffs. Well it's clear that my team has a chance to win the division and that's got me pushing some chips in. I personally love Gonzalez as he's only 19, has good scouting behind him, is at least top 100 in most midseason lists, and is performing at an elite level this year. I expect that he'll be considered a top 50 spec by the offseason. He's currently batting .348/.398/.519 with 7 HRs, 8 SBs, and a 144 wRC+. I would have preferred to keep him but I had to give up good value to get a stud like Semien. He'll be a big upgrade for me over Rengifo for the rest of the season and then I'll hopefully be able to do something good with the comp pick I'll get for him when he leaves in free agency. Nice trade talks Royals GM (Bill).

Accept. I had really hoped to get more for Semien but this was the offer that I liked best and his value will continue to drop as the year goes on. I like Gonzalez a lot and I’m just hoping he keeps it up when makes that jump to AA. I’m looking at him as the comp A pick that Semien would have brought at the end if the year. Nice dealing Kyle.

Veto. I don’t see how this is fair value for a 4+ ppg player. Yes he’s a free agent at seasons end, but he’s also got a comp A pick tied to him. Gonzalez is having a nice season but he’s in A ball. It’s basically 6 weeks of Semien and a comp A for a top 80-90 range spec

Top 100 prospect with forward momentum (this gets overlooked too often when judging prospects) for 6 weeks of a 4+ PPG guy and a top ~350 prospect? Seems like the exact type of trade we should see more of

Approve - I know for a fact Bill got at least one other offer for Semien. GG is ranked ~100 right now which my farm value rankings equate to Pick 1.17. So Bill gets to move up 14-ish picks in the first round (which I also have as about 1.8x value over Pick 1.31).

Approve. Initially in the same boat as Tim, but Bill and Kyle have been around a while so I know both know what they are doing and in that case I think this is fine.

Veto. I like Gonzalez. But Semien is a top 10 scoring player in fantasy. And he has a 1st comp pick if they were to let him go. He's knocking on the door of top 100. I think this is more a question of, is Kyle paying enough for a top 10 scorer in fantasy? Not, Bill is happy with what he got. Haniger is nothing to Kyle with his injury. It's not enough. This isn't fair to the other teams in the NL West fighting for the division. Kyle gets one of the best scorers in baseball, but barely gives anything up. This is the very definition of a lop sided trade in my eyes. This is a move that affects the entire NL West race, going from Rengifo to Semien. He's got to pay accordingly for him.

Approve.
I don’t think this is really that close to a veto. Semien is a top tier rental and gets a comp A pick, but he’s going for a great prospect. You never know who is going to be there when you’re drafting so the Royals are making their own luck with the pick and getting a prospect they like.

Veto. See Tim’s post. I get without the COMP A pick, not with Kyle getting a first round pick back… Will’s explanation makes me think what Bill is getting is more minimal than less.

Seems like the exact type of trade we should see more of Approve If I may add a point: This Comp A pick is 12 months from being drafted IRL, (at least) 13 months from debuting professionally, and 18 months from being drafted in our league. It’s fair to expect Gabriel Gonzalez to have finished the year in AAA by the time this pick is used
