Hey guys, as you may have seen, I recently put in the idea in the suggestions part about claiming prospects. What I thought was a good idea at the time personally, turned out to have more flaws in it than I had thought.
So instead of throwing away that plan, I took some of the elements of the claiming idea, and applying them to a milb/international draft.
In short, here is the idea:
A 15 Round Milb/International Draft *Players drafted would be prospects who don't have teams and have never played in an mlb game, or any international free agents under the age of 24. ** Excluded from this would be Japanese players coming into MLB and Cuban Defectors, as most of them are up in age, and will make it to the big leagues almost instantly.
The picks for this draft CANNOT be traded. As the only pick that can be traded are in the first year player draft.
The order for this draft would be the standings reversed for all 15 rounds.
There will be a 1-2 day break between each round.
Okay, that is the outline of it, now here is the meat of the whole thing.
Like our first year player draft, the order will be hard slotted, and each team will pick 1 by 1, with 24 hours on the clock to take their pick.
(Note one of the admins will pm you it is your pick)
The new feature to this would be rounds 2 through 15.
I came up with a logical, yet simple way to make this draft go faster in the later rounds so it does not drag on. From my prospect claiming idea, I took the idea of ranges.
The way it would be is insead of picking 1 by 1 and waiting the whole 24 hour period, we would do a group of 6 teams for a period of 2 days. These teams within that group or range will be allowed to pick whenever they want to in that 2 day period. And by the end of the 2 day span if they do not pick, they will be autopicked.
An example would be:
Instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 order
It would be
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5
Each group of 6 people will have 2 days to claim their draft pick, and if they do not, then it will be autopicked for them.
Not only will this speed up the draft tenfold, it allows other teams, instead of the worst, to get the better players, depending on the group.
This is not a rule, yet a mere suggestion to get this draft up and running. I support it beacuse the draft will not drag on anymore, and it gives every team a chance to strengthen their farm system

Now, one question, it it a search-and-find situation or will the unowned prospects be displayed? I am assuming the former

I agree with the basic idea of this sort of draft (to help it speed up), but I still think we should just combine the 2 drafts into 1 draft and let the draft picks be traded (with the explicit understanding that you're basically drafting a slot) if it's not a 1st round pick.
My logic for combining the two drafts was that unsigned players were actually more likely to be valuable than those from the amateur draft as they'll already be ranked prospects and it won't be a crapshoot for who pans out and who doesn't. Moreover, these players will be more MLB ready instead of high-schoolers.
One last suggestion, rather than using age as a benchmark for international FAs, use contract status (MLB contracts make them MLB FA, MiLB contracts make them eligible for the MiLB draft).

I am assuming the former I am not sure yet completely on that, as we have to come up with a way to autopick for teams who don't put in their pick. My initial thought is that we would wait until John Sickels puts out his top 20 + lists for all of the minor league teams, and from that we take all those guys and compile them into one list. This would save everybody the time who doesn't want to research, and it will allow them to pick that from that list, and also guve us a way to autopick for teams. Initial thoughts on that, but not completely sure. Gregg

Oh, never caught on to you saying that Slava. But yes, I actually do like the idea of combining the first year player draft and the milb/international draft. Would make things alot less hectic. Mind editing the post to what your ideas were then Slava? And I agree with the contract type on the internationals. This would ensure that players lieke Yu Darvish wouldn't be drafted. Gregg

I like Slava's idea, Combine them, but have a pay system for International FAs older than a certain age.

I'm against combining the drafts.
I think we should have our MiLB/IFA Draft sometime before the season starts. Then have our Amateur Draft sometime after the actual MLB amateur draft just as we did this past season.
An easy way to settle the International Free Agent dispute would be to allow any IFA who has signed with an MLB team by the start date of our draft to be included in the available player pool for our draft. Any other IFA that signs with an MLB team after the start of our draft will be added to free agency, and will be put through the FA process just the same as any other free agent would. The majority of draftable IFAs would be the young Latin American kids(DR,PAN,MEX,VEN,HON,etc). The Asians(JAP,KOR,etc), & Cubans would be included in FA due to the posting process for the Asians, and the Cubans need to establish residency outside of Cuba before being MLB eligible.
I really like the group slotting idea for the later rounds of the draft. That should greatly help to speed up, what was a sometimes long process.

It's not what you think. He means combining the MiLB draft (the one w/ all the released MiLB players and undrafted players) and the International Draft.
The Amateur draft would still be seperate.

Cool...I misunderstood. I do agree with the idea of combining the unowned MiLB player pool with the signed IFA player pool for our first draft. Then having the Amateur draft later on as we did this past season. With the player pool consisting of the amateur players involved in this seasons actual MLB amateur draft.

Well, actually I did mean combining the 2 drafts. In my opinion, the amateur draft is kind of a cluster%$#! after the 1st round. There's almost no scouting data on players outside of the 1st round. And in general, the early rounds are hit and miss. On the other hand, prospects that are ranked enter into the system all the time and thus every year in the spring when baseball agencies release their top prospect info, we can draft players based on real knowledge. Some players will be from the amateur draft, some will be international FAs, and yet others will be guys from the late rounds who have really blossomed in the minors.
In my opinion, this is ideal... but I'm not against holding two separate drafts. The confusing thing would be having 2 types of draft picks and how to handle trading them.

I like the idea. One suggestion. After round 2, we just skip teams if they don't come on to pick instead of picking for them. Makes it go faster. But other then that, if you can set it up...
