This year, and continuing forward, we will have a GM of the Year for the AL and the NL. GM's were selected based on the moves they made that improved them from year to year. Consequently, teams like Angels, Rockies, and Reds (that were already powerhouses in the previous year) were not considered above teams that came from the bottom to the top.
With that, we will start with the National League.
The 2012 National League General Manager of the Year:
Gregg Willis, Houston Astros.
He took the Astros and made them contenders (wait, did I just say that?). Gregg made great moves in the off-season, smart deals in trades, and nearly made it to the NLCS. He brought in talented players like Alex Rios, Brett Anderson, and Gavin Floyd without compromising his farm system. The Astros still boast one of the best minor league rosters (Gyorko, Springer, Paxton, and Bundy). Congratulations to Gregg!
The 2012 American League General Manager of the Year:
Kyle Locker, Minnesota Twins
How do you have the #5 pick in the draft in July and be atop your division? One great improvement by a team. Kyle did a great job making the Twins not only contenders, but a top 10 team in the league (best in the AL Central). His big acquisition of the off-season was bringing in slugger Josh Willingham from, ironically, the Houston Astros. Overall, Kyle did a great job, and I expect a repeat winner of the AL Central.
I boosted each GM of the year's karma. Congrats guys!
