Red Sox Receive
James Shields Ryan Roberts
Diamondbacks Receive:
Nick Castellanos Leonys Martin Seth Mejias Brean Boston’s Rd 2 amateur draft pick (pick #10, overall pick #40) Ramon Hernandez
I get another big starter for my rotation and a decent bench guy.
Both Castallanos and Martin are top prospects and Mejas-Brean and the pick have a chance to be.
Nice working with you again Kyle

Honestly I think this is worse that the first James Shields trade. Castellanos has yet to succeed at a level higher than A ball so far in the minors and scouts are quickly starting to turn on him at the start of the year noting that he's starting to seem Josh Vitters like. Leonys Martin has done zilch in either of his MLB appearance and is a huge work in progress so it's hard to determine what he'll ever do since he's already 25 and this is where he should already be producing at a decent level. Mejias-Brean is 22 in A ball ala Mike Olt and his number in rookie ball last season are more than likely inflated due to the fact that he's playing against teenagers. This years draft is also pretty bad in terms of depth so that pick could possibly be pretty iffy. Shields is worth so much more than mediocre prospects. The guy is an ace and one of the best SP's in our league in terms of points.
Veto (0-1)

I look at what Shields went for in real life, Myers, odorizzi and more. This deal is no where close to that especially because shields throws up 200 innings every year. Castenellos is good, and could be something but its too risky. The other prospects aren't much. You can do much better look at what I got for halladay.

I have to veto, based on other opinions, since I did give up more in the first Shields trade, and it got vetoed. Hopefully we can work something out. (0-3)

Wow, I’m actually quite surprised by this. Thought we had a fair deal here.
I think Shields is getting a bit overrated here. ESPN ranks him around the 20th best starter in points this year. Behind guys like Bumgarner and Wainwrights and even with Latos. He’s certainly a very good pitcher, but he’s literally 100 points less than Verlander. He’s only 20 pts higher that Ian Kennedy, who Kyle and I were able to deal without issue. Castallanos is ranked 25-40 by most prospects lists I see, and Martin is in the top 100. The pick and Mejias-Brean have young, raw, potential. That’s my 2 cents……
Anywho…..I’ll cancel this one as it doesn’t appear to have a shot and see if I can rework something with the Diamondbacks……Look for a version 2 coming soon…….
