Tigers receive:
AJ Ellis - C - LAD (Arb A, 6/7, $3.0M)
Bobby Parnell - RP - DET (Arb A, 7/7, $1.4M)
Jose Berrios - SP - MIN (prospect, $0.3M)
Dylan Bundy - SP - BAL (prospect, $0.3M)
Matt Barnes - RP - BOS (prospect, $0.3M)
Astros receive:
Danny Valencia - 3B/OF - OAK (Arb A, 7/7, $6.8M)
Jaime Garcia - SP - STL (Arb A, 7/7, $8.2M)
Eduardo Nunez - 3B/SS (Arb A, 7/7, $3.8M)
Drew Storen - RP - TOR (16: $3.5M)
Tigers cover $17.0M of the $22.7M (74.9%)
The Astros are picking up 4 players whose contracts expire this year, but they are all players who are more apt at helping the team in the short run than the current MLB-ready prospects that I'm giving away. With Storen, I've got the back of the Blue Jays bullpen locked down with Cecil and Osuna already. Valencia adds another strong power bat with 3B/OF eligibility to allow for flexibility. Nunez also strengthens the middle infield as another starter who I can plug in when needed. The real need was Jaime Garcia though - an established piece for the rotation to add some extra starts each week.
While Berrios did not exactly impress in his 4 start debut, he was very hard to give up as he is still just 21 years old and one of the best pitching prospects in the game. Unfortunately, with his demotion my team was left with an SP-sized hole that I couldn't expect rookies to continue to fill. Dylan Bundy and Matt Barnes, though currently in their big league bullpens, were not exactly seeing crucial innings and Storen will be better equipped to help this team in 2016. AJ Ellis was expendable as the Astros have 3 capable catchers as it is so he, in addition to Parnell, was added to help get the salary coverage down to the required 75%. The Tigers gain $0.4M in cap space after all is said and done.
Solid negotiations, Jacob. Good working with you.
