It's been a while since we have had a power ranking, so I figured I would try to help fill the void, by putting together a mid-week pre All-Start game power ranking. This is a great league with plenty of talented owners that I'm happy to have found. Hopefully, my words won't come off as too harsh, that my grammar and spelling isn't so bad that you can read what I hoped to write and that in the end we can find enjoyment in this game. On to the rankings...
30. St. Louis Cardinals (2-11)
Clayton Kershaw and Zach Grienke are stuck on an incomplete roster. The Cardinals biggest problem is the front office, this is a team that needs help, they have no 1B or SS and refuse to field a complete OF. It's not like they have a roster void of talent, the minor league system has a few gems like Eloy Jimenez and Rafael Devers, while Samir Duenez is starting to look like he could develop into a MLB 1B which this team could use. This team is hampered by ownership.
29. Pittsburgh Pirates (1-12)
Imagine if the real life Pirates tried taking the field with an incomplete roster and the front office still having a job, that is what is happening here. This team is handcuffed by a front office that refuses to make a real effort to field a complete roster. They have some talented veterans in Miguel Cabrera, Evan Longoria, Ryan Braun in the lineup to go along with a pitching staff that boasts the talent of Robbie Ray, Masahiro Tanaka and Sean Manaea. Kenta Maeda has been less than consistent this season, but it doesn't really matter on this roster. I think this teams strength is the lottery ticket minor league pitchers that this team has acquired, but once again needs the front office to kick into gear and actually give an effort.
28. Atlanta Braves (1-12)
Kyle Seager and Gregory Polanco are the players to build around, this is a team that is looking for a change in fortune. The major league team is as bad the record indicates. Jon Duplantier and Cal Quantrill are highlights from last seasons draft, hopefully the Braves can strike a bit more gold this season because something has to happen with this team. Patience and luck are what this team is looking for.
27. Los Angeles Dodgers (3-10)
Poor Dee Gordon or not, karma has a way of coming around. David Peralta and Kevin Pillar are both good serviceable outfielders, there isn't to much to get excited about on the major league roster. Chad Kuhl and Sam Gaviglio are doing what they can to develop into viable MLB starters, maybe they do. If you comb through the minor league system a few names jump out, but this is a team heading to the cellar. With 9 picks in the coming draft the Dodgers get a opportunity to collect some talent that will hopefully change their future, because from where I'm sitting this franchise is a couple of years from becoming more than a free win.
26. Cleveland Indians (3-10)
Hanley Ramirez and Felix Hernandez have contracts that have seemingly hurt this teams ability to compete. The Indians have done work trading in an effort to provide a better future. Starling Marte is coming back from his suspension, Bruce Maxwell is getting a chance to be the A's catcher of the future, Eduardo Escobar offers a solid option in a lineup that isn't that far away. Miguel Andujar, Kevin Newman, Michael Chavis, Yanio Perez, Leodys Taveras must be good because of the Tim Tebow effect, but they aren't the only prospects that have potential to be MLB players. Pitching is where this team is really needing help, on the plus-plus side they do have Espinoza, Burdi and Scott. With the upcoming draft the Indians have 2 first round picks to go along with 7 more picks that could really right the course. This team has work to do, but they don't have to be this bad that long if they don't want to be, they are currently riding a 3 game winning streak.
25. Chicago White Sox (2-11)
The White Sox have a core of Joey Gallo, Michael Conforto, Max Kepler, and Mike Foltynewicz which helps make up for the disappointment that Jordan Zimmerman has been. Adalberto Mejia has four plus pitches that he throwing for strikes, Byron Buxton has been incredible in July, maybe this team is going to be able to compete sooner rather than later. The White Sox are another team that needs help with pitching, however it's my experience that MLB pitching isn't as hard to find if your willing to find it. Amed Rosario has done seemingly everything he can to get his shot at MLB superstardom, last years 1st round pick AJ Puk looks pretty good, the White Sox are going have to make their 4 picks count to hasten their quest to not be a bottom feeder.
24. Minnesota Twins (3-10)
Salvador Perez is a great catcher on a team that decided to wave the white flag, Josh Reddick leads this team, which is also why the Twins are ranked as low as they are. Trey Mancini is exciting, Anibal Sanchez might have remembered how to pitch again, TJ Rivera and Eddie Rosario have chances to hit themselves into MLB career regulars. Robbie Grossman probably needs to get traded, he is working as a pretty good 4th OF plus he is on a good contract, so even if he is kept the Twins lineup really only needs to address 3B and SS, which isn't always as easy said as done. Pitching, it's not so good in Minnesota, they aren't void of talent, Yadier Alvarez and Rogelio Armenteros (spelling correction on the spreadsheet) are couple of Cubans that are dreaming of being MLB superstars. I wouldn't want to forget to mention Gleyber Torres who leads the Twins minor league system, hopefully with the upcoming draft the Twins will find 6 picks that stock their system to provide at least the hope of a, we'll get em' next year.
23. Toronto Blue Jays (4-6)
The Blue Jays are a team that has bright future but is handcuffed by ownership. As much as I enjoy watching Adam build this team, there really isn't a good excuse not to have Jose Osuna, Luis Castillo, Paul Blackburn, and Sal Romano on their ESPN roster being that the roster is not full. Jake Lamb is leading this team, Logan Morrison has been impressive, Scott Schebler along with Ender Inciarte are being joined by Mallex Smith to offer a exciting young outfield. Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester have been disappointing this season, but if ownership can figure out how to call up prospects, then the future is bright because this team has an impressive minor league system. Jorge Alfaro, Kevin Maitan, Alex Jackson, Austin Meadows, Magneuris Sierra, Anthony Alford, Christian Stewart are some of the bats that highlight this impressive collection. Then the Blue Jays have a collection of minor league arms that are to many to name. Plus, the Blue Jays are owners the 1st pick the upcoming draft, maybe all this team needs is some good old fashion, effort and pride.
22. Seattle Mariners (1-12)
I see the record, but this is an interesting team, Mitch Moreland is working as the leading veteran on this roster of young superstars. Then there is Hunter Renfroe/Ramiel Tapia/Austin Hedges that create a nice trio of said young superstars. Wlimer Difo is benefiting from a more available spot in the Nationals lineup. Pitching is coming along as well, the Mariners have Dinelson Lamet, who is an exciting prospect doing his best to make a home for himself in the Padres rotation. Mike Boisinger and Chris Stratton started, which is something. However, the exciting aspect of this team is their minor league system along with 23 draft picks for this upcoming draft. Brent Honeywell, Rhys Hoskins, Ryan McMahon, Derek Fisher jump out as a few of the top prospects that offer this team hope that this rebuild is closer than their record indicates. Brandon Marsh, James Nelson, Fernando Tatis Jr., standout as minor league hitters that have seen their stock increase this season. Oswaldo Arcia is enjoying AAA hitting and could be a nice value piece for the Mariners in the future. Then, beyond Honeywell the Mariners minor league system has plenty of arms, that have been acquired through the draft and trades. Don't forget this team has 23 picks to improve a nice collection of talented young players.
21. Arizona D'backs (4-9)
Eric Thames is a bright spot in a lineup that isn't all that bad. The pitching staff is incomplete, this is a team that has lost hope, the NL West is not for the weak. Derek Holland offers a wonderful value in the starting rotation. I don't know that Nick Gordon is enough of a hitter to make up for this teams lack of hitting prospects, but he is a good start. For some reason Mark Leiter Jr hasn't been called up to fill out an incomplete rotation. JoJo Romero is making noise and looks to find some help as the Diamondbacks prepare for the draft and their 2 first round picks
20. New York Mets (4-9)
Jose Abreu is hitting well, Corey Kluber is an ace, and the farm is starting produce it's harvest. Ian Happ, Mitch Haniger, Bradley Zimmer all represent a new look Mets team that is making an effort to compete. Carlos Rodon looked healthy his last start, Brandon McCarthy is healthy again (for now), hope is the air. Good news for the Mets fan, Brendan Rodgers and Mickey Moniak look as good as advertised. The farm could really use a boost, however in the attempt to compete again, the Mets are with out a pick in the upcoming draft. One of the most improved teams this season.
19. Chicago Cubs (5-8)
Chris Sale leads an impressive starting pitching staff that includes Noah Syndergaard, Carlos Martinez, and Jake DeGrom. Manny Machado and Matt Carpenter are a very impressive corner infield duo. Xander Bogaerts and DJ LeMahieu make up a very good middle infield. Orlando Arcia is starting to make noise in the majors, addison Russell finds himself of the pine as well. The outfield could use upgrades, but this season is lost for the Cubs. Injuries have really helped the Cubs be one of the biggest letdowns this season, maybe next year. The Cubs find themselves with 2 picks left in the upcoming draft, hopefully they find enough talent to right the ship, this team is close to be very good, but they could easily continue to disappoint as long as luck is a factor in baseball.
18. Baltimore Orioles (6-7)
A good run of bad luck is how this team started the season then a 3 game slide, but they still have Bryce Harper and Giancarlo Stanton so it's going to be hard to feel sorry for the Orioles. Healthy reliable pitching is really needed on this roster, but the Orioles don't have any draft picks, or that many assets of value in the farm system yet they, the Orioles have a good active owner that always seems to have another trick up his sleeve. This is one my favorite teams to watch throughout the season.
17. Philadelphia Phillies (4-9)
The Phillies have high expectations, this season they aren't living up to them. Zack Cozart is now a goat owner. Yuli Gurriel is starting to show why he had the hype coming to the States. Kole Calhoun has turned it one since Mike Trout went down, Avisail Garcia might have finally broken out, while Jorge Bonifacio is an interesting power hitting youngster. Jameson Taillon is pitching well after coming back from surgery for testicular cancer. The Phillies are looking to the draft with the second overall pick to go along another first round pick to restock the minor league system. This is a team that could win any given week, don't take them lightly or they will beat a resting team.
16. Tampa Bay Rays (7-6)
The Rays are becoming victims of an nearly absentee owner who is having a difficult time staying active. Maybe with the return of Freddie Freeman and AJ Pollock, Nolan Arenado won't have to be a victim of a nearly absentee owner. Not to play match maker, but I think the Royals or Yankees have a 2B that could fill a void. Who knows, maybe Tzu-Wei Lin will hit himself into a utility role to provide depth. Lewis Brinson looks really good and could soon add to this already good team that has a rotation lead by Chris Archer. Austin Hays, Andres Jimenez, and Eric Lauer standout as a few prospects that should have enough value to find the pieces needed to make an effort to back door them selves into the post season. I enjoy seeing the Rays be active, hopefully all is well in the real world for Jake and he will come back to running a Rays team that is in need of an active owner.
15. San Diego Padres (8-5)
The reigning champs lost Trea Turner to a fractured wrist. Adam Duvall continues to put up impressive numbers. Jason Vargas is a great value on this roster. Wade Davis is an elite reliever, however the word on the streets is that Padres could be soon under new management, hopefully this doesn't happen, because this league is better with Matt than without. I'm hoping the upcoming draft, having 2 first round picks, might be enough to spark the interest into this roster. The Padres are in a though spot, but as long as Matt is around the Padres could be a team to watch out for.
14. Oakland Athletics (7-6)
Francisco Lindor teams with Nelson Cruz and Khris Davis to guide this lineup. Injuries have been a hurting this team, but such is baseball. David Price is shaking off the rust and leads a rotation that is waiting to not only get healthy, but develop as well. Bryce Wilson, Austin Franklin, Merandy Gonzlaez and Jordan Hicks are a few of the young exciting rising prospects that are still far away but offer plenty to dream on. It will be interesting to see the direction the A's take in the draft, but if they play the draft right they could end up being a team that could fill out as a very solid team.
13. Kansas City Royals (8-5)
Andrew McCutcheon is hitting like we have become accustomed, Justin Smoak has finally broken out? Miguel Sano is a superstar in the making, Ryon Healy looks like a pretty good major league hitter, Jonathan Schoop is doing his best to earn his contract. Marcus Semien is healthy again, Willson Contreras represents an exciting young catcher. Paul DeJong is looking like a nice MLB player as is Manuel Margot, alot of young bright spots in this lineup. Brandon Phillips probably would be off being traded but having depth isn't that bad of problem to have. Pitching is thin, but there is enough to be a post season team, plus they have the Sean Newcomb who has looked impressive in 3 of his 5 starts. Greg Holland at $500k for the season is a huge bargain. Ozzie Albies is exciting in Gwinett and leads the Royals minor league system that has talent throughout, I like this collection of minor league arms that could really help this team as they develop. The Royals are involved in a pivotal matchup with the A's this week, win or lose this team is a team not to be taken lightly.
12. New York Yankees (10-3)
Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, Chris Taylor and Adrian Gonzalez offers the Yankees a lineup that a Dodger fan would really appreciate. This is a well run franchise that has battled through the injuries of a season as a result have plenty of low risk players that produce points on days when they are really needed. Zach Godley has really stepped up this season as he averages more points per start than Cueto and Leake. Look for the Yankees to make the most of their 3 picks in the draft to help fill in a minor league system that has players that seem likely to realize their floor as MLB players.
11. Washington Nationals (10-3)
One of the more interesting teams in the league, the Nationals aren't afraid to make big trades. Justin Turner when healthy has been incredible, the problem is keeping him healthy. Yasiel Puig is as frustrating as expected. Kyle Schwarber is back in the majors and Andrelton Simmons has been refreshing this season. The pitching staff is talented, but the question will be, do they have the depth to make it through the National League post season, not a bad problem to have. While there isn't much to choose from in the minor leagues, the players they do have, have talent. The Nationals don't have any draft picks, so they are going to have to rely on luck, trading, or help from above to continue their over-achieving ways this season.
10. Los Angeles Angels (8-5)
Mike Trout is rehabbing, Chris Davis is getting closer, Josh Donaldson might be healthy, it always helps to have Max Scherzer. The Angels still look like a playoff team, as they have the honor of having winningest owner in the league. Jose Ramirez is establishing himself as a really baseball player which would make sense as to why he is on the Angels roster. The international market has been very good to the Angels as they continue to remain a team to model after. Look for the Angels to stock up in the coming draft.
9. Cincinnati Reds (9-4)
With a roster led by Anthony Rizzo and Jose Altuve this should be a playoff team. Madison Bumgarner is nearing his return, which will help the Reds continue a run at the post season. Gio Gonzalez, Carlos Carrasco, Lance McCullers Jr are a good trio for any rotation are joined by another trio of pitchers in Charlie Morton, Matt Garza, and when healthy Jon Lackey. The Reds have a few lottery tickets in the minors but only have 4th round pick plus not much cap for the rest of this season. It will be fun to see what the Reds do, to stay in the race.
8. Detroit Tigers (9-4)
Leading the AL Central the Tigers led by Mike Moustakas? This a team in every sense of the term that is well organized, if that makes sense. Lorenzo Cain and Brandon Belt offer veteran leadership while Josh Bell and Jackie Bradley offer hope for a bright future as well as a bright present. Dr. K going down hurts this rotation, but Jose Berrios is 8-2 on the season and the Tigers might have enough fire power in their farm system to make it the post season in good shape. Lucas Giolito has been working out the kinks and offer the Tigers a bright spot in fairly solid minor league system, with their 2 picks, they will be able to add a couple more bright spots.
7. Texas Rangers (11-2)
When I look at the Rangers I see a good lineup, a pitching staff that is serviceable, and then the Rangers have second best record in the American league. Robinson Cano is a good contract, the infield is solid, the outfield is solid, there is a stable of arms. I know the Rangers to be though negotiators, maybe they will find some depth to compliment this roster for a postseason run. They don't have much in the farm as far as hitters, but they do have a few arms and 4 draft picks that could propel this team deep into the post season.
6. San Francisco Giants (9-4)
The Giants have never had a winning season in the history of this league, that is changing, the Giants have become a collection of talented major league veterans and highly touted prospects. Might be a little generous with the praise, but this team was bad, really bad and now, they are 3rd highest scoring team in the league and look to be getting better with every call up. Joey Votto and George Springer are the studs that lead this explosive lineup but this team lacks a consistent pitching staff. Depth however, is not an issue as the Giants seem to have more talent then they know what to do with. Beyond the major league talent, the Giants have a rather impressive collection of prospects that are about to enjoy a boost from an incoming 21 draft picks in the upcoming draft.
5. Miami Marlins (10-3)
When you have Paul Goldschmidt winning is easier. Make no mistake this team is stocked throughout and could easily find themselves as World Series Champions this season. The outfield is impressive Andrew Benintendi, Adam Jones and Christian Yelich are going to keep a team in the winning column more times than not. Healthy pitching is going to be key for the Marlins, but don't look now, but Alcides Escobar is hitting again? Miami has 3 late round draft picks, talent is easy to find for this organization, which will work out well for a team that is going to need the ball to bounce their way in order for them to realize the goal of a championship.
4. Milwaukee Brewers (10-3)
Mookie Betts leads this strong team, pitching is not an issue Yu Darvish, Alex Wood, Steven Matz make sure of that. Josh Hader is looking impressive, Aaron Sanchez, not so much. Danny Salazar is nearing a return. It's said pitching wins championships, we will see. Dustin Fowler was lost in his MLB debut, but the Brewers didn't need him anyway. Milwaukee is another team that finds talent with relative ease, with 8 picks in the coming draft they are going be that much better off.
3. Boston Red Sox (12-1)
11 points in week 1 is all the Red Sox needed to have a perfect record (the games in April matter), all the same they lead the American League as a very impressive team that has enjoyed a turn around in fortune. I'd say they need a 3B, but their record indicates otherwise. Carlos Correa and Marcell Ozuna provide a solid duo to continue to win around. However this team is about pitching, Ervin Santana is the ace, but Edison Vasquez in the one who threw a no-hitter this season. Bullpen depth might be a need here, but when your 9-1, you don't really need outside advice steering you in a way your not already going. Yoan Moncada is nearing a return to a MLB lineup, will he hit this time? The Red Sox are also highlighted by some fun prospects in Jason Groome, Mike Shawaryn, Dillon Tate and Yusniel Diaz. I'll be curious to see what the Red Sox do with their only pick in the draft, but I don't think this team is as focused as building a minor league system as they are focused on winning, best of luck, it's always fun watching someone succeed.
2. Colorado Rockies (11-2)
Oh, by the way, Aaron Judge is in the majors and he can hit major league pitching far. Charlie Blackmon was brought in to help off the rest of the NL West and catch up to not yet mentioned Astros. The Rockies have collected a very impressive collection of talent, will it be enough, probably, but from what I know about being newly married, this offseason isn't going to Alex's full attention. The minors are filled to the brim of impact prospects, with the 5 picks the Rockies have they will look to improve on an already very impressive team, will the Rockies win another championship?
1. Houston Astros (13-0)
The top tier is the Astros. The most complete roster it's rather silly to look for holes, the Astros are undefeated and seem to be on cruise control. The championship is theirs to lose, which should be alot of pressure. Will is as cool as they come and has a wonderful vantage point of being the top team in the league. What is surprising about this team, Kris Bryant is the highest scoring 3B on this roster, Travis Shaw owns that honor. Zack Granite is getting a chance to experience the majors after turning into a hitting machine in AAA. The Astros have 8 picks coming into the draft, watch to see how is selected, you might want to try and get them on your team in other leagues. The question will be, can this team continue the magical perfect season by bring a championship to Houston?
