GM's were selected based on the moves they made that improved them from year to year. Consequently, teams that were already powerhouses in the previous year were not considered above teams that came from the bottom to the top.
2019 American League GM of the Year
Austin - GM, Minnesota Twins
2018 Record: 6-13
2019 Record: 17-2
Back to back years for AL Central GM's. Austin just won a GM of the Year award back in 2016, yet this award far surpasses the one three years prior. The Twins made an eleven game improvement, going from 6-13 to 17-2. From missing the playoffs to a first round bye. It doesn't happen often. Most of Austin's moves took place in the off-season, when he assembled a fantastic lineup that got the team over 6,500 points. It was easily the Twins best year in franchise history, and after receiving criticism of the team's rotation in years past, Minnesota now boasts one of the better young collections of starting pitchers in the league. Great season for the Twins, and hopefully it can be rewarded in the post-season! Great job, Austin!
2019 National League GM of the Year
Max - GM, Pittsburgh Pirates
2018 Record: 2-17
2019 Record: 14-5
Back to back years for NL Central GM's. After eight straight seasons to start the league with no playoff appearances, GM Max took action, reshaping the roster with a flurry of trades to finish the season on a twelve game winning streak, beat numerous top NL teams, and reach the playoffs against the pre-season odds. They made a twelve game improvement, going from 2-17 to 14-5 and also winning their first playoff game ever by beating the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the playoffs. Pittsburgh has a good a shot as anyone to win the World Series this year, which would be remarkable, being the White Sox made the playoffs for the first time in league history last season and won the World Series. The Indians are the only remaining team to not make the playoffs... just saying, next year could be there year. Great year, Max!
