Good afternoon all, this discussion has been brought up a few times and I wanted to post an official thread for further conversation about our current draft structure.
As it's currently scheduled, December 1st would be the start of the 2020 Amateur draft which includes all unowned MiLB players as well as recent 2020 high school and college draftees. Just 5 weeks later, the MiLB draft is scheduled to take place, this draft will also include all unowned MiLB players in addition to J2 signings.
The current format presents a few issues. First, the MiLB draft (starting in January) would be using the 2019 BK standings for a 2nd time to determine the draft order. Since we already had a 2020 MiLB draft using the 2019 BK standings, this would be to the benefit of the lowest performing teams from the 2019 season. Second, the draft pool is already severely limited due to Major League Baseball only having a 5 round amateur draft in 2020.
We've discussed previously a consolidation of the MiLB draft and the Amateur draft into one unified offseason draft. I believe this is the perfect time to switch to a single draft.
Under this proposal, we would still have a '2020 amateur draft' in February or March of 2021. This draft would include all college and high school drafted players from 2020 as well as any unowned MiLB players. This draft WOULD NOT include the J2 signings from January, rather these players would roll into the consolidated MiLB/Amateur draft that would take place next offseason (November 2021).
The 2021 consolidated draft would take place in November 2021 and would be based off the 2021 BK Final Standings. This still allows the league to have an amateur draft based off the 2019 BK Final Standings and then start anew with the combined draft based off the 2021 standings.
The new combined draft would also be expanded to accommodate both drafts being merged in to one. My initial thought is a 10 round draft. Since the contraction of Minor League Baseball involves the removal of 25% of the minor league clubs, I figured we did not need to continue to have 12 rounds worth of draft picks. Comp picks and where they would occur is something that would need to be discussed but I think that's an easy discussion.
I think this would help keep the offseason activity in place throughout the winter as well as simplify some of the administrative duties for the commissioner.
There may be a few other minor issues that I have failed to address, if you can think of them, please comment below.
