Rockies trade: RP, Kirby Yates ($5m through 2022)
Indians trade: CLE 2021 3rd CLE 2021 6th
Needed to clear some cap space and Yates wasn't going to rack up points for me this season. Hope this works out for Thomas, thanks for quick negotiations. Rockies confirm.

Cleveland confirms.
2022 fits my timeline better than this year at this point (when I drop $65m in contracts), and Yates could be a steal at $5m for my bullpen after TJS. Thanks for the quick negotiations, Alex!

Veto
What is going on here? Alex should be trading picks to dump Yates. I don’t understand how a 34 year old RP who’s over a year away from returning is worth a 3rd and a 6th.

I should be trading away picks to move a guy who makes five million? He was the best reliever in baseball in 2018 and 2019. C'mon dude.

He wasn't the best reliever in either of those years. Last year he was hurt almost the entire year and now he's having TJ. Thomas is taking on 5M this year and 5M next on a guy that pitched 4 innings in 20, will have pitched 0 in 21, and who knows when and if he'll be back in 22. The guy is 34 now and will be 35 next year.

He'd get that if I cut him and he went to free agency right now.

You're clearing 5M cap this year and next and getting a 3rd and a 6th for it! That's my problem with the trade. Don't act like 5M is nothing when we know it's the difference between getting a player and not getting a player.

So just because I need to clear cap space, suddenly I need to give up draft capital to do it regardless of who it is I'm trading because it helps me get another player. Yates is worth multiple draft picks and was one of the best closers in the game in the last full season of baseball we played.
I'm done arguing with you. Let everyone else decide.

The average return time from Tommy John is 19 months. He had surgery at the end of March. His potential return time based on the average would be for the 2023 season after his contract in BK would be done.

I am casting my vote towards the veto side.
With Yates having the surgery on March 25th, I think the best case scenario would be him returning around the all-star break next season. Assuming all goes well. So 2 draft picks for 3 months of a 35 year old recently Tommy John'd reliever seems like a lopsided trade...and there's no guarantees of a return to his 2019 form either. 3 years is a long time to go without solid production.
I don't see any real value here for the Indians in this trade. The Rockies receive 2 draft picks as well as 10 million over 2 years of cap relief. While Yates was a stud in 2019, he was a dud in 2020 and will be 36 years old and a free agent by the time he can give a full seasons worth of production.
The going rate on healthy, active relievers with less salary and more control has been much less the last few years.

Drum roll.....Approve. I think Yates has value being signed through next year. That means, in my mind, Indians should have to pay something for him. Alex is dumping a contract, sure. But its not a contract dump of a guy who isn't playing anymore. It's a guy who more than likely will be back, whether it be for 1 season with Indians or not. Being theres only 2 picks here, Indians are taking on the risk of him not being healed in time to help next year or not, so 2 picks seems fair to me, when a healthy Yates (currently, based on last season) would garner much more. So basically its 2 picks for 3 months'ish of Yates. A 5th and 6th would make more sense to me, but it's not egregious.

Veto. There’s only 2 years on Kirby Yates’ contract. With Tommy John surgery, Yates probably won’t return until halfway through next season. Meaning for a half a season of Kirby Yates who maybe comes back for that, Cleveland is giving up 2 draft picks. To be honest, I feel like Colorado should be giving up some picks and Cleveland should be giving up almost nothing.

I'll finish this off. A rare veto from me. I don't think Alex needs to give up picks to trade this, but I also don't think this most likely half season dart throw is worth a 3rd and a 6th. More comfortable with a 5th or 6th rounder alone as a dart throw.
