We should have a thread where people can just talk. This league would be a lot cooler if everyone got to know each other better.

So I'm umpiring here at Cooperstown Dreams Park this week for their big 12u tournament (it's freaking awesome here, btw). This week I did a game head coached by Ty Wigginton and another HC'd by Andy Pettitte. If any of y'all are umpires, I highly recommend you find your way up here. Experience of a lifetime and I get to do it again in August.

I was an assistant coach for my son's team that went to the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament about 14 years ago. They have weekly tournaments throughout the season with 96 (IIRC) teams at each week. It was a fantastic experience. In addition, we went to a hamburger joint on the outskirts of the Park, called "Hamburger Heaven" owned by Clete Boyer and whom we met and talked baseball for about an hour. Great memories... (PS: and the umpiring was pretty good too!! )

That's awesome! They have 13 weeks throughout the summer and they're up to about 105 teams each week. I'm a relatively new umpire, but there were guys there with World Series rings both MLB and College when they umpired so it's a really awesome experience working with guys of that caliber.

Why do people not delete their old "updated" posts on their trade block? Annoying having to sift through 2 pages.

Glad to be here and I'm ready for my first draft pick in a new age, having big shoes to fill. Matt had a lot of success and I hope I can follow that up; along with chatting with others about baseball and making a team that's my own.
So with the first pick in the history of the San Diego Padres under new management, we select.... jk I'm not up for about 25 picks. Had to build suspense, but glad to be here.

My first pick was everything I hoped it would be. I had all 3 players available that I hoped might realistically be available, plus I had the two that I would take if these other guys were gone. Happy Dance!
Keston Hiura is the player I viewed as the best college bat, followed by Pavin Smith. Jordon Adell was my top HS bat. I think his batting practice swing is like looking at art, want to watch him develop as a hitter, with a eye on how he handles breaking pitches, but see him as future All-Star with a similar career path as Justin Upton.
Can't talk about players that haven't been drafted yet, but so far, I am thrilled with how the draft is going. Feel free to discuss your picks, or not, I'm going to have a great time drafting either way.

I mean, I basically had to take McCay at my pick. I have no clue if he is a pitcher or a hitter, and I have no clue if he will be good. But, everything said he was a steal if he dropped to 5. Wish me luck

Your right at pick 5, you almost have to select McKay. I think the hope has to be that he can develop into a version of Madison Bumgarner, I'm not sure he has the control that Bumgarner has, but given McKay's track record in college it's difficult to bet against his success. McKay seems like we could be looking at the wave of the future, a specialized pitcher/hitter. MLB Pipeline has McKay as #23 overall, Baseball America has him at #40.

Michel Baez joins the Giants. This one was helped by the guys that were selected in front of me and the players available in the later rounds, I was considering 4 other players here, I don't know if I could have passed on Kendall had he been available, it came down to the hype that is swirling around Baez. Felt like I missed selecting him in the winter draft and didn't want to risk not being able to select him in this draft as I don't think he was going slip through the 1st round. I've only been able to see limited video of Baez, it looks like fastball location and developing a third pitch will determine if he ultimately starts as he rises through the Padres system. It helped to take what I feel is a risky pick, looking forward to who I think might be available when the draft rolls around to the Giants again. Overall, I am thrilled to have selected Baez as I view him as one the prospects with the most helium in the minors. Best of luck on your next selection.

Really pleased to have RHP Alex Lange join the stable. I thought Lange compared well to Alex Faedo and Kyle Wright, wanted to make sure secure the best curveball from the college ranks while being able to select a target, rather than simply going for the best player available.
I break my lists into tiers and was trying to select between 9 other players, Brent Rooker was my pre-draft target for this pick and since he went earlier, I used him to the judge the hitters I was pondering. Being that Rooker and that swing of his looked so pretty, it seemed like the other hitters I was looking at were second choices. The 3 pitchers I was deciding between was a bit easier, thus Lange came out as the selection. There was one, that I would say is ranked higher in the draft class, but I was concerned about his medicals (hope I didn't give it away), and the other I like, but he didn't look great in his last start and figure the biggest threat to select this player will be the Mariners, if I don't get scared and pick him with my next pick, 1 pick away. I'm sort of hoping the Cardinals will help me out and select one of my targets, just to help narrow this next pick, I really feel there are so many good players available, it's hard not to make a good selection, best of luck and see y'all in a pick with my next prized selection.

The Giants system is getting deeper, Adbert Alzolay, the 3rd Chicago Cub pitching prospect selected today. Alzoaly was top player on the board, at least according to Mlb Pipeline (CHC #3) and Baseball America (CHC#4). I've heard that there is no such thing as a pitching prospect, but pitchers have to come from somewhere, might as well be my farm system. I still have a few more pitchers that I want to round up and I have my eye on so many bats that will fit nicely into the Giants system. It's coming down to who I'm willing to not select, I'm going through trying to talk myself out of every prospect I want to draft, just to try and keep short lists short. I've got 2 more picks in this round, so I'm trying to narrow my lists into 15, that way I won't get too attached to a prospect just to have them selected by another team. Best of luck with your picks.

I do hope you are correct with Alex Lange. I'm really hoping to load up on pitching in this draft, expecting to add at least 10 pitchers, so far I've got 3. With this next pick, I'm going for a bat.
Drew Waters is the latest to join the Giants. I don't mind so much, waiting 24 hours, when you know your going to get your target. I almost talked myself out of the pick, but I couldn't convince myself that I wouldn't regret passing on him. His high school coach, proved unbiased when asked for a comp, he threw out Mike Trout or Mickey Mantle, seriously. I see a good switch hitting athletic outfielder, he was drafted as a center fielder, but he profiles more as an everyday right fielder. I think the thing that set him apart from the other possibilities was his exit velocities during the showcases. I think there are 3 players that I'm targeting with my next selection, 6 picks away, pretty sure one will still be available. Best of luck gentlemen, it's still difficult not to make a good selection.

Giants add 1B Gavin Sheets!
From the Baseball Draft Report: College first basemen are some of the most difficult players to rank this early in the draft process because, of any amateur position, first base is the spot I utilize data almost as much as scouting reports. There are many things to look for in young batters when it comes to projecting the hit and power tool; for starters, you’re looking for swing mechanics (balance, rotation, gather, load, fluidity, repeatability, etc.), vision (tracking pitches), bat to ball contact (cliché or not, there is a unique sound you’re hoping to hear), bat speed, and, one of my biggest things for power, how well the hitter’s upper and lower body work together. Seeing and hearing about these things is vitally important, but, more so than any other tools (and to paraphrase national treasure Rasheed Wallace), bat don’t lie. If you can hit, your production will reflect it.
I should have been able to talk myself into selecting a less risky and higher ranked prospect. Hans Crouse would have been my selection, but no Alex had to select him, I know I should be used to such things, but Alex continues to select players I'm targeting every draft, usually 3 or 4 times a draft. With the way the draft is going, Gavin Sheets might have been available when my next pick rolls around. However, middle of the order bats aren't easy as checking the box score. The concern is that if Sheets doesn't hit, he becomes just another power hitting AAAA 1B. His swing is a bit long, so there is a risk of him not being able to catch up to plus-plus fastballs, but I don't buy it, I think he has the strength and ability to adjust in the batters box, which is reflected in his strike out rates (it will be something I will be keeping my eye on as he develops). I've been trying to find a comp for Sheets, but they aren't right, I've seen Lucas Duda, but Sheets has more power and better plate discipline, Peter Alonso comes close, but he hits right handed and Sheets I think has more power potential than Alonso, but a similar hit tool. The bottom line is that it feels good to get a middle of the order bat.
Now, comes a hard part of the draft, 18 picks away. The good news (for me, not so much for you) is that even if all goes terribly wrong and you guys continue to select players that I'm targeting on my short list, I will still have an opportunity to select another player drafted in the second round. I'm expecting a dozen players from my short list to be selected. Best of luck with your selections.

Padres Draft Tristen Lutz Big 6-3 power hitting outfielder who was drafted by the Brewers and instantly became their #8 prospect... and he's just coming out of HS.
I see you NL West, were gunna have an even better division in the next couple years, and I'm ready to see how these guys pan out, I've got 3 of my top targets, and can't wait to see what keeps coming
