Hey guys,
We discovered that the Dodgers drafted Yenier Fernandez in the 5th round of the 2022 International Draft (last year). He was already picked by the Angels in 2020 after digging into it. The draft pick was at 5.18, so we will give Scott a comp pick in this International Draft after the 18th pick in this year's 5th round to make up for it being we didn't catch it. There's precedent for this, but I don't have time to go through the archives to find links. Someone can fact check me on it.
Thanks!
Alex

Why 5.18 and not end of 5?

BK Player Search (link)Just so everyone knows, we have a player search function for our main rosters - we also have Fantrax with every player imaginable rosterable. Not really much of an excuse to draft someone already owned. I don't want a 2016 precedent that the league did not really like affect 2023, and we have better systems in place now that we should no longer have to compensate owners for mistakes like this. I see Fernandez is still not owned on Fantrax. Why is Angels GM (Derrick) still in the league if he doesn't want to fully participate.

Past examples I could find of awarding a compensation pick when a player was removed. Derek Fisher (2016) - baseknock.proboards.com/thread/6793/derek-fisher-league-vote. This was also not cut and dry. - Pirates 2011 owner auto-drafted Fisher in 2012 (inaugural season) as the draft took place before the signing deadline.
- Derek Fisher was a DID NOT SIGN and was not appropriately removed from the roster according to our rules.
- Pirates were also given a compensation pick the following year at the same pick, but this was for a DID NOT SIGN scenario.
- Pirates 2011 owner traded 2012 Pick 5.1 to CLE: baseknock.proboards.com/thread/3098/pirates-indians
- Derek Fisher finally removed from Pirates roster in 2016 and some good, solid drama ensues (see thread above)
Rob Whalen (2016) - baseknock.proboards.com/thread/6750/rob-whalen-espn- Rob Whalen traded by Dave (or CC) to Brewers in January 2016 (link)
- Rob Whalen not removed from Nationals roster after trade.
- Rob Whalen traded again by Dave (or CC) to Mariners in May 2016 (link)
- Mariners are gifted a Comp C pick out of nowhere (after Round 3), and they draft Aaron Civale. This pick materialized out of nowhere and Nationals did not have to provide additional compensation.
Neither of these are really precedent for our scenario, though I'm still looking. Additional commentary: The Whalen compensation for Phil is pretty outrageous. I miss 2016 Derrick, he was feisty.

I would vote for Pick 6.31 being awarded if I had to make a proposal.

I will just say Fernandez's name was misspelled on the Angels roster which is why I missed it. I'm fine with whatever the league decides

Why 5.18 and not end of 5? Maybe the past examples are making this more complicated than it needs to be. - Scott drafted Hernandez and used the search tool. Hernandez first name was mis-spelled, so it wasn't caught.
- Thus, Scott did the work correctly, and lost a draft pick from less than 12 months ago due to a spreadsheet error.
- In the moment, we would've let Scott make up the pick, but we didn't catch it til now, so we have an easy remedy with the current draft going on to allow him to make up the pick at the same slot he had last year.

Appreciate the explanation - I just don't think it makes sense to penalize half of the GMs in round 5 for this oversight. If Scott picks the guy I want with that pick then I am penalized, but if I owned the 5.18 (like you do coincidentally) then I wouldn't have to worry about it. What if you had noticed this oversight after we completed this entire draft? Then what?

GMs already received benefit by having the Dodgers essentially skip a player in the 2022 draft

Fernandez is 19 and hasn't even sniffed A ball, so what benefit was that?

The rules committee has unanimously voted to award Dodgers GM (Scott), a pick at the end of the 5th round of the 2023 International Draft (the current draft), so he'll have pick 5.31
