Cubs Trade:
Austin Hendrick (prospect) Wade Meckler (prospect) DJ Gladney (prospect) Christian Chamberlain (prospect) Yasiel Puig: 2023 - 8 mil 2024 - 8 mil option
Yankees Trade:
Kodai Senga: 2023 - 28 mil (75% coverage) 2024 - 28 mil (75% coverage) 2025 - 28 mil (50% coverage)
First buying acquisition for the Cubs. It’s no secret I have been looking for starting pitching, and I begin here with Senga. I am willing to take the risk on the contract with the dollar amount and years in hopes that he can improve his consistency and be a stable piece in my rotation. Thanks for the talks, Wheez!

Yankees (Wheez) accepts. Finally moved Senga, and finally made a deal with Tanner. It’s only been 3.5 years in this league. All of the prospects in the deal have been having good seasons so far in the minor leagues, and Puig is a salary dump. Thanks Tanner

Are any of these guys even top 10 in their organizations? That’s a ton of money into the future to cover on Senga… taking Puig’s money and no picks either. I don’t know.

I’ll need time to digest this. But the Puig money is only this year since next year is an option.

Veto.
$21M in 2024 and $14M in 2025 is an insane opportunity cost to the Yankees for a prospect grab bag. If 2024-2025 coverage was removed I would consider approving, albeit begrudgingly and would still be a clear Cubs win in this trade.

DJ Gladney in A+ this season: 38 G, .283/.321/.586, 10 HR, ETA of 2024 Christian Chamberlain in AA this season: 14 G, 2.45 ER, 14.32 K/9, ETA of 2024 Wade Meckler in A+ this season: 20 G, .456/.494/.633, ETA of 2024 Austin Hendrick in A+ this season: 39 G, .257/.335/.361, 9 SB, ETA of 2024 Yasiel Puig: makes almost no difference because I have the room to take him, and I will just not pick up his option next year.
You guys get way too hung up on FV, and organizational rank that you can’t even look up how these prospect have been playing and trending.
Veto if you want. But odds are another trade will happen with the exact same players. Because they are having very good seasons, and fit into my timeframe of wanting to compete.

Jacob, why are you pushing back on a veto when it could net you more value out of this trade? Also the sample size for the guys you listed is just barely bigger than Tim’s weiner.

Gladney is 21 in High A and has a .243 average, .291 obp, and 3 HRs for the month of May.
Chamberlain is 23 in Double A and has a 5.12 fip, 11.57 k/9, and 9.64 bb/9 for the month of May.
Meckler is 23 in Double A and has 1 HR, 2 SBs, and a .086 iso for the month of May.
Hendricks is 21 in High A and has 1 HR, 6 SBs, and a .137 iso for the month of May.
Objectively Hendricks is the only one I’d say that has had a solid month. Hendricks is the only one that has any kind of positive scouting behind him as well.

I gotta veto. Tanner is getting like SIXTY million in cap coverage and a good starting pitcher. See reasons above.

Veto There's a comparable trade that just happened involving Jon and me. Gray was moved for 4 specs and cap coverage this year only. The cap going forward is just way too much for the quality of prospects involved in this trade. So the cap coverage either needs to go away or the prospect return needs to be much better. Yankees GM (Jacob), you should be asking for more instead of 4 guys that had good two weeks in April.

Veto (first from me I think).
I agree with Jacob that there are times everyone gets way too hung up on prospect rankings.... HOWEVER, this seems to be extreme. Jacob - you are taking on like $60M in cap over 3 years and dealing a pretty good arm (which are in high demand throughout the league at the moment) for a lot of what I would call 'average' prospects at best. I don't think any of these specs are in top 250 in any consensus rankings.
From a value perspective, I don't think this is close at all.

I’m a let guys run their own team guy too, and it would be one thing if the money being covered wasn’t so egregious but for me that pushes tbis over the top.

This got vetoed, but wanted to state that this from Nik "Why are you pushing back on a veto when it could net you more value out of this trade?" does not always come true. Now this contract is longer and I bet another deal can be worked out, but sometimes the veto kills a deal and the owner's ability to trade the piece. Not saying it is misplaced here, but just something to stay aware of is that we all have different valuations of players and if we kill a deal for someone, it doesn't always get redone as better for that owner.

What's happening here? Y'all giving up on Kodai already? This trade doesn't make sense at all and the Yankees are rebuilding. They should hold onto Kodai and trade him later on. I'm sure he can get better value then this while retaining salary.

Stephen, I agree with you - which is why I intentionally put “could” net you more value. However, in this case the deal was so lopsided that it is almost certain he can get more value.
