We are having an MiLB Draft in the middle of January and don't have a predetermined way to set the order for the draft. Please comment with ideas for how to do this. Tim (Nationals) has already suggested doing a tiered snake order (see the Draft Update post). Would like to have a decision by the New Year. Thanks! baseknock.proboards.com/thread/9725/draft-update

Using the current 2020 draft order...here is how the tiered snake draft order would look:
Round 1 1. SDP 2. BAL 3. CIN 4. WSH 5. TBR 6. LAD 7. CLE 8. MIA 9. TEX 10. OAK 11. STL 12. ARI 13. KCR 14. ATL 15. DET 16. NYM 17. NYY 18. SEA 19. CHW 20. HOU 21. PHI 22. CHC 23. LAA 24. PIT 25. TOR 26. MIL 27. MIN 28. SFG 29. BOS 30. COL
Round 2 1. OAK 2. TEX 3. MIA 4. CLE 5. LAD 6. TBR 7. WAS 8. CIN 9. BAL 10. SDP 11. HOU 12. CHW 13. SEA 14. NYY 15. NYM 16. DET 17. ATL 18. KCR 19. ARI 20. STL 21. COL 22. BOS 23. SFG 24. MIN 25. MIL 26. TOR 27. PIT 28. LAA 29. CHC 30. PHI

I don't like this at all. (The Order snake thingy) I am for pushing back the draft until after free agnecy slows down. Why wouldn't we wait until February. We just passed halfway in our current draft. I am not sure we will be ready by Jan 15.

Since MLB is delaying the J2 singings 6 months, I'm for delaying our MiLB draft until the end of the 2021 season and using the draft order based on 2021 results. If MLB has their typical J2 signings in July of 2021 then I would suggest we just combine the draft pool and increase the number of rounds in the MiLB draft for one year. If January 15 becomes the new J2 then we can just continue to have the MiLB draft after the end of the previous season.

All previous kidding aside...I’m alright with this. Not perfect but it’s not a bad compromise for a one time situation. I definitely think we should have a draft, not push it to after season or skip it. I’m good with waiting till Jan. 18. I don’t see a ton of downside here.

Draft date for the MiLB Draft is now TBD instead of in January. Not enough discussion.

Deciding to push the draft back until mid-February. New target start date is February 15th, current format idea is the snake draft (sectioned off every 1-10 picks).

One of the reasons I don't like the 1-10 snake is because 1, 11, 21 have everything to lose and 10, 20, & 30 have everything to gain... Of course Tim is in favor of this because he would pick #4 or #7 (only 3 spot diff) and Alex is in favor because he gets to move up 9 spots every other round.

Cardinals GM (Nik) Yes. But teams are not in the same spot that they were when this draft order was set. So I'm obviously not in favor of picking last in back to back drafts based on the 2019 season. Your team is also greatly improved, so it doesn't make sense to just give you the 11th pick again based on 2019 results. Some teams get a big benefit (Baltimore is definitely not a #2 pick team), some teams are a net loss (Yankees should not be picking #17).... but I don't see a more fair option being people have no interest in a crowd-sourced new order based on how we perceive the teams would've finished in 2020.

Sucks for the guys in the middle too. I would almost rather put people into buckets and do an equal lottery for those buckets. something like:
Tankers: NYY, CHC, TEX, SDP, CLE, TBR, LAD, CIN, NYM, OAK, KCR (based on power rankings, but I also agree with it)
Not Tankers: Everyone Else
I would rather lose to a lottery personally than snaking the tiers.

Serious question. What would it hurt if we postponed this draft until after the 2021 season and used those standings as the draft order?

Cause we have nothing better to do till the season, so why not have a draft? That's not an option in my book.

We agreed to postpone the amateur draft, I don’t see how this is much different.

To echo my previous statements, it’s a one time fix to a unique situation. A draft like this hopefully won’t happen again, barring another worldwide pandemic, and this gets us back on track to our usual schedule. I think it should be done before the season because that’s our usual schedule and the MiLB draft is used by lots of owners not only for international guys but for depth MLB pieces as well. No reason to take that opportunity away in this instance. I’m all for the proposed snake ordering and drafting before season starts.

Raise your hand if you voted to delay the 2020 season, but now don’t want to delay the Milb draft.

I'm not a fan of the snake order for almost the exact reasons Nik stated above; however, I can't say I have a better solution.
It really does suck being a middle of the pack team and not getting any benefit of a snake format. Seems a little unfair to be honest, but again, I'm not sure how to fix it.

Cardinals GM (Nik) if we push this MiLB Draft out again then will have the same problem a year from now... we will need to do two drafts based on one season. Maybe I'm wrong, but as Zach is saying, this is a one-time fix to get us back on schedule. I think the best way to do this would be to establish a committee or something to determine the draft order based on current talent. Or have everyone vote and aggregate the results. Or have a handful of owners vote. If don't want to leave it up to any owners opinions, then we're left with doing what we can (snake, etc.) with the previous draft order to make it more fair.

Why not use early 2021 rankings? Those don't seem far off. Maybe a few teams are up or down a spot, but idt theres anybody that should be up or down more than 5 spots.

I certainly hope not. During the season contenders can trade their picks for pieces and teams that realize they aren't in it can sell. I think having it after the season is a horrible idea, having it in July where it always is, is perfect.

Current plan is to have a Feb. 15 draft with tiered (groups of ten) snake orders. International class is officially announced tomorrow for the... 2020/2021 J2 class, not sure what to call it these days.
